Alvin Fox update and advice

Hi, all. Sorry I haven't been a good communicator lately. Earlier this month my Cardiologist surprised me by finding 2 badly blocked heartarteries, and I required angioplasties with stents. I had bypass surgery 12 years ago, 5 bypasses. I'm very, very lucky he found them, and corrected them.

In "chatting" with Sharon this evening, it occurred to me that a number of our classmates may be flying in for the Reunion. There is a great Shuttleservice between Chattanooga and the Atlanta Airport, and Chattanooga and the Nashville Airport. It may be cheaper to fly in and out of Atlanta or Nashville, and there are many more choices of flights.

The shuttle is Groome of TN. It is on Ringgold Road. They use 10 passanger vans which are clean and comfortable, and they have a reputation of most always being on time. I scanned their schedule, and it is attached. Scroll down as there are three pages. Lauren and I took the shuttle from Nashville to Atlanta recently, and we found it enjoyable. I had a nice chat with our driver from Chatt to Atlanta. He went to City, and graduated in the mid 1960's. He was among the first group to move from Howard High to City. The cost is approx. $35 per person for each segment. They may be willing to work with us as a group. You may want to post this info on our blog, or mail it with the invitations.Take care, Alvin

Update on Dan Anderson

Subject: Update on Dan

Some of you know and some of you don't know that Dan has been at
Parkridge for 5 weeks. They have been trying to find a combination of medicines that will help him sleep at night.

Out of 5 weeks, he has probably had 4 nights with about 6 hrs. sleep. He dozes a little during the day but not much.

I, along with the doctor, cannot understand how his body is holding up. They have tried several combinations and just when we think we may have found something it goes the other way. It has been a real roller coaster for him.

I met with Dan's doctor this morning and he wants to keep Dan one more week. Needless to say he is confused about not being able to find something to help but Dan's body is just not responding. Since Dan dozes during the day they are going to try to give him his meds much earlier in the day and hope that it might help him sleep at night. We can only hope. When he is awake, he is pleasant enough but very confused.

If after this week Dan does not respond to any of the medications, they will have him evaluated by a nursing home. The doctor explained that Vascular Dementia is a little different from Alzheimer's. With Alzheimer's you know the stages and what to expect with them. It is harder with Vascular Dementia in that you don't know what to expect. The doctor feels that Dan is in the last stage but I don't want to believe that.

Please keep him in your prayers.

Thanks!

Hey Folks,

I am just blown away by Kent Shalibo's generosity. I received another donation from Kent in lieu of his not being able to make the last few meetings.

He has been a very loyal and supportive member of the class of '59 and our reunions, and his generosity is impressive. I think I speak for everyone when I say a great big, huge THANK YOU, Kent.

Love from North Chattanooga,

Susie (Crouch)

Anne (Johnson):

Good meeting last week. You're really on top of things.

Getting everyone moving in the same direction is a bit like herding cats, but I believe you'll get the job done. Our class is fortunate to have people like you, Sharon (Tunnell), Carolyn (Presswood) and Susie (Crouch).

And of course, Dru (Fuller). I'm amazed at her abilities to handle the internet. Thanks to all of you.

And Sharon (Tunnell): Glad you weathered Ike (that hurricane). Hope you didn't sustain damage.

Best to all,
Lloyd (Stanley)

Carolyn Anderson called to let me know that Dan is in the hospital. He has not been able to sleep at night and they are trying to find some medication to help him. He has been in the hospital for over a week and now can have visitors. Jim Miller and I are going to visit him tomorrow. Carolyn has vertigo which was probably caused from exhaustion. I will keep you posted.

Love from North Chattanooga

OMG - what a good meeting we had tonight - some new faces and occasional faces. Carol Cameron Ackerson and Margaret Llewellen Crosby were first timers and some returnees that we haven't seen in awhile were - Della Dowd, Mickey Cobble & Jim Miller.

Now a special thanks to Carol for a very, very generous donation to our reunion fund. Lloyd Stanley handed me another super generous donation from someone at our meeting who wanted to remain anonymous. I think I speak for everyone - both contributions are so much appreciated and needed.

Love from North Chattanooga,

Susie (Turner Crouch)

Regrets

Good morning all! I won't be at the meeting either. We are in the middle of another home renovation and I've got three deliveries today (stones, gravel and sod) that I must be here for.

Dianne is in Heaven when she's doing one of these projects. Thank goodness I'm still working. (I've told some of you before that I measure my success by whether or not I'm making more money than Dianne can spend. Right now it's KLS Specialty Products d/b/a Lehman Bros.)

I've been preoccupied with the Vanderbilt reunion which is just three weeks away. Once that's behind me, I can help with our big event! Actually, helping is a misnomer because so much has already been done by the same very capable people who were leading our class 50 years ago.

One way I can help is to send a contribution. So, Susie, please give me the address I need to send the check to. Warmest regards to all y'all.

Kent

Anne, I am sorry to have to tell you that I will not be able to make the reunion committee meeting tomorrow evening. As you know, we have been talking about it for a while, and how much I was looking forward to it.

I missed the last one, that I had also planned to attend, because of a stroke that one of my managers had in one of our companies. I did attend the one before that, and enjoyed it so much. Not only did business get accomplished, but the chance for me to get together with a lot of class mates was just so enjoyable for me.

I have many fond memories of my three years at City, and of many of my class mates. Those of you who live in Chattanooga just don't realize how fortunate you are in the fact that you get to see each other on some what of a regular basis. Those of us who don't live there really do appreciate it when we get to participate.

The reason I won't be there is because of the current gasoline shortage in Atlanta. I have less than a quarter of a tank of gas in my car. The news down here has been saying for a week now that this would get better soon. Well, just the opposite has happened. I tried for well over an hour this evening to get gas, and none of the 5 gas stations I went to had any gas. And when I asked when did they think they would get some, none knew. Their guess was any time from tomorrow to maybe 2 or 3 days from now.

I talked to mom today up on Signal Mtn. and she told me her cleaning lady did not come to clean her house today because she went to 5 different gas stations in Chattanooga, and none of them had any gas.

I am disappointed, as I was looking forward to being there, and to seeing a lot of you. In fact I specifically communicated with George Derryberry, Delmar Lee Reynolds, Lloyd Stanley, Ann & Lew Waddey, and Kent Shalibo to tell them I was coming and that I hoped to see them there. So that is the reason I am placing all of them on the cc of this email to you, to be able to let them know my situation.

My mom is disappointed I will not be in Chattanooga tomorrow as she always enjoys seeing me, and of course I like to visit with her as often as possible, as she is 89.

I was planning on leaving either late Thursday evening after the meeting, or else very early Friday morning, as I have a very important financial meeting in Atlanta that I have to attend Friday. It has been set for months, and affects a number of people, and I have an obligation to them and thus there is no way I could miss it.

Anne, I will miss seeing you and all the others. I really do appreciate all that you and all the other committee members do, and really feel so bad to be letting you down. But the circumstances are beyond my control. Please continue to keep me in the loop as you have been doing.

All my best,

John
