Thank you, Dru! I wish I could have attended the picnic...........it must have been so much fun! The write-up was very clever...............good reading on a beautiful fall morning!

It's great to see a picture of Danny - especially one with a smile on his face. I'm happy that many are near enough to visit him from time to time - the rest of us can send peace and strength his way be remembering him in our prayers.

Some of you have been asking about Dan so I'll try to update you. He is doing about the same, no better, no worse. The last few weeks he has been more emotional and cries alot. Some days he is alert and enjoys his visitors so I appreciate the ones of you that do visit him. The thing about Vascular Dementia is that it doesn't get any better but I love the good days whenever he has them.

That was a really cute way to send the pictures on the blog.  Sounded like the game was to eat good food.  My tubby tummy wishes it could have been there; however, I mostly hated missing the visiting with friends.

’59 CHS Stars Win Big Sat. Night! Next Game:10/22/09!

Saturday evening the ’59 All Star CHS teamwas again victorious! The arena was the Darr Farm, with the evening’s head coach Carolyn Darr.The team lined up looking fit and “ready to play”. Players were: Kent & Eleanor Smith, David & Sandra Parker, Lloyd & Marty Stanley, Lew & Ann T. Waddy, Carolyn T. & Larry Presswood, Anne Johnson & David Weidner, Gaynell H. Smith, Vicki D. White, Susie T. Crouch and Carolyn T. Darr.

In the pre- game pep talk Coach Darr directed the team to “Play this game just like we do in practice.” Coach Carolyn T. Presswood was heard saying,“We’ve been practicing for 10 years so let’splay OUR game.”Defensive captain, David Parker, chimed in, “All we need to do is show up and we will be victorious. Some of our most valuable players are not present due to distance or injuries. They are missed and in their absence, we need to play harder. The game continues!” To which the team clapped their hands, ran out of the huddle yelling,“Go ‘59ers Go!”

It was apparent from the beginning that the game was going to be one for the books. The Darr arena was spectacular and it was a perfect early fall evening.“The “59 Stars Were Shining!”

Quarterback Susie Crouch called the signals and the team responded with all sorts of good moves—Hot dogs, chili, slaw, potato salad, Darr Farm tomatoes and basil, deviled eggs, spinach dip, pimento cheese, home made ice cream, brownies, hummingbird cake, heavenly hash, ice tea and cokes and more! Cheers were heard, “59 is Fine! ‘59 Stars Still Shine!”

“Win or Lose, the’59 CHS teamwork and spirit are “World Class!” Keep it up and we will have many more victories. “Go ‘59ers GO!”

Next game is Oct. 22, 2009, noon, at Virginia’s restaurant. Get your game face on! See you there! All are welcome.

Don't forget Dickinson grads' reunion on Oct. 25.

I sent a message to some friends about my trip to The Cove and got a message back from Dru asking if I wanted it on the blog.  After I thought about it, I told her that some friends I did not include might like an update on Billy Graham, Cliff Barrows and Bev Shea.  Then I sent her a note and told her I would put it on.  So here it is:

 

Hi,

I just wanted to share with you about a trip I just took with my husband, Bill, to The Billy Graham Conference Center at The Cove in Ashville, NC.

 

We left on Sunday and drove to Knoxville where we spent the night.  A high school classmate of mine, Margaret Sims Trainer, and her husband, Fred, picked us up and took us to their lovely home for an appetizer and then to eat at a restaurant that was a good choice.  We had a great visit.

 

Monday we drove to Ashville and checked into the motel where we hooked up with my brother, Don, and his wife, Peggy.  We did not stay on the grounds at The Cove as we were saving a little money and the motel was just across the road from the entrance to The Cove.  Staying there worked out fine.  In the afternoon, we registered and chose the workshop we wanted.  The main building is large with decks with rocking chairs and views of the mountains.  Inside there is a room with a huge fireplace and seating.  To one side is a very large dining room, and on the other side is an auditorium with seating for about 475, I would guess, as I think there were about 450 of us in attendance for the Senior Conference with Cliff Barrows and friends.  They provide coffee, soft drinks, and ice cream at all times.  The food was delicious and plenteous.

Hearing Will Graham, Billy's grandson, speak (Will said his grandfather, almost 91, is missing his wife and this makes him lonely.  Will said his grandfather just wishes he could preach one more time.)

But, the thing that moved me the most was listening to Cliff Barrows, age 86, and George Beverly Shea, age almost 101, sing together and to sing with them.  I was thinking about how these men spent their lives singing Christian music and now they are so close to heaven and they are still trying to help others.  I wondered sitting there if I was as close to heaven as I am going to get on this earth.

 

Then, when we were leaving yesterday we went on a tour of the chapel.  Upstairs there was a prayer room.  On the wall was a verse from the Bible about not being anxious for anything.  Lift all cares to God.  I thought about how I worry about this world when I listen to the news.  I also thought, as I read the verse from the Bible that was printed on the wall, about how I should be joyful and know that God is in control and He will carry our burdens.

 

I enjoyed the trip so much I just wanted to share it with you.  Thanks for listening.

Peggie said her family moved to Florida in 1962.  She married in 1964 and has a son and a daughter and 3 grandchildren, I believe she said.  Her husband was in banking and they moved a couple of times but stayed in Florida.  Her mother is still living and Peggie visited with her today.  She and her husband have been on several mission trips with their church.  Her husband is from Southern Illinois and they have attended his class reunions but she has never known about our reunions.  Peggie said she would like to attend our 70th birthday party.

Of all my friends, it is my CHS classmates that mean the most to me.....it is in each other that we had our beginnings......."City" was to us "Our Town".......we left there in 1959 as competitors, to make our way in the world that lay beyond....thinking we had all the answers, only to find out that we did not........those of us still alive reunited again this year after 50 years.....this time, however, carrying with us all the baggage that we had accumulated over the past 50 years............coming home, we reached our hands out to each other...and will now help each other until we reach the finish line....

Peggie Carpenter Waller

I, Louella Cherry Spencer, was looking at the pictures of grammar school and junior high that Tommy Wilson sent.  There was Peggie Carpenter at Normal Park Elementary and Northside Jr. High with my class.  I had tried to find her before our reunion but was not successful.  I had found out from Classmates.com that her married name is Waller.  So, I tried again and found her in Florida.  She is going to call me back tomorrow when she will have more time to talk.  I just love to find old friends.  I'll share her info when she calls me back.

More About J. D. Barton

I, Louella Cherry Spencer, asked J. D. to tell us more about the last 50 years of his life.  Here is his response.

I was in the band(s), orchestra and participated in other music "stuff". I remember the Pajama Game....I was the goofy guy who called for "Poopsie" at Hernando's Hideaway. After graduation, I joined the air force. I went to basic training, then to a 9 month Intensive Russian language school on Long Island. After that, and a 3 month school in W. Texas to learn how to operate radios, I was sent to Germany (Bremerhaven, near the North sea).

There I met a daughter of an army man stationed there.....and to cut to the chase - we were married 3 months later. After 47 years, she is still putting up with me. (After Bremerhaven, I shuttled back and forth from Germany to Texas, with a one year side trip to a 2 mile by 4 mile island in the Aleutians (Shemya).

I retired from the military in 79, and because she is from Ft Worth, that is where we settled. I was pretty sure I would not be needing Russian language in Texas (or at least HOPING!), so after working with it for 20 years - time for a change.

I started looking for a job, and found a good inside sales job at a high quality sheet rubber manufacturer in Ft Worth. I have been at the same job for 30 years next month (yes, still working - and as long as I am healthy, why not!)

My wife and I had two kids, a daughter now 46, living in Hollywood, and appearing occasionally in TV shows or TV movies. She also teaches drama at a middle school in the Los Angeles area. Her husband is also an actor, and works with the Muppets, along with regional theater and a group that produces "Puppet Up" now and then on TV.

Our son is also teaching, at Arlington, TX, about 20 miles from us. He and his wife have one son, 12, so we only have the one grandchild.

You asked for a "blurb".......so this one will obviously have to be chopped down a bit. My blurbs are often lengthy "blobs". Sorry.

As for the 70th birthday party.....no promises. I do not get back to Tennessee very often. I have one sister living there (Louise Barton Welch, CHS class of 57), and I do go to visit her now and then. Since my birthday is at the end of December (41), I am probably one of the youngest in the class, although my white hair does not indicate that. (I don't care what color it turns, as long as it doesn't turn loose.....guess I'm safe there.) So, whenever the 70th birthday party is, it might be a wee bit early for me.

Thanks for the email...and I sure am glad you put your name in the heading.....I delete emails so often if I do not recognize the names.
