Happy birthday Doc, you ancient history of a man. Enjoy your grandchildren, but try to act your age and don't let them know how really old you are. Do you think your high forehead and white "goldilocks" will give you away.

Chattanooga gathering

Our photographer, Linda Chambers, was a no-show tonight so no pix! We did have fun, however. We went to the Terminal - Kent and Eleanor Smith, Kyle and Gaynell Hixson Smith, Jesse and Sandra Belk King, Ron and Judy Laubscher McClurg, Anne Johnson and David Weidner, Vicki Daniel White, Carolyn Thomas Presswood, Carolyn Tuley Darr, Della Hallum Dowd (glad to see Della) and I had a good time.

Gaynell and Kyle have offered their houseboat next month to take us to Ari's Restaurant at Lakeshore. We will meet at 5:00 at Harrison Bay Marina for an hour boatride to Ari's. Mark your calendar for the 4th Thursday in June.

Love from North Chattanooga,

Statler Brothers' "The Class of '57"

The Statler Brothers have been called "America's Poets" by Kurt Vonnegut.  Vonnegut took a special liking to their "The Class of '57," as he explained in his essay collection Palm Sunday. "I would actually like to have 'The Class of '57' become our national anthem for a little while," Vonnegut said.  "I can see Americans singing in a grandstand at the Olympics somewhere, while one of our athletes wins a medal-for the decathlon, say, I can see tears streaming down the singers' cheeks when they get to these lines: 'Where Mavis fin'ly wound up/Is anybody's bet.' 'The Class of '57' could be an anthem for my generation, at least."

The Statler Brothers' "Havin’ Quite a Time Spotlight Exhibition" opens at the Country Music Museum and Hall of Fame on June 1.   The legendary quartet will visit the museum on June 3.

Paul Robere:News Flash:  The war's over..
Dru Fuller: Wow!  That was quick.
Paul Robere: I'll send more information as it becomes available.  they just announced an agreement and the "Red Shirt" lead told everyone to go lhome..

Happy B'Day to Eric Reece

Happy birthday, Eric, and  many more. Isn't it interesting how our lives have progressed from high school till the present; what made our world go around at 18 and now when our "Medicare" card is one of the most important "things" in our lives.

Take care and enjoy not only your birthday, but EVERYDAY.

The other Thailand (from Paul Robere)

A lot has been said about Thailand over the past two months, and while we are close to the conflict we can always escape to other places just a of hours away..

Sadly, the world only sees what is happening in downtown Bangkok (a short distance from me) but not all of the country is like this.

The picture that I just sent you is just a couple of hours away...looks peaceful doesn't it?...and indeed it is.  Here is a little article talking about the "other Thailand" that you might find interesting.

from Paul Robere in downtown Bangkok

Paul Robere: The situation continues in it's intensity with the government gradually stepping up the pressure for the protestors to stop their violence. We're safe...as far as anyone in downtown Bangkok is.Our office building was evacuated yesterday pending a possible problem with drive by shootings at high-rise buildings. The news of the conflict can be followed at: www.bangkokpost.com for any who are interested.Today, we have a virtual town-hall meeting with Ambassador Eric John on lthe current situation.
Embassy staff families have been given the opption to leave the country if they wish..As I sit in my office this morning..there is a gray haze over the city left over from lthe burning tires in various locations.
Dru Fuller: Safe sounds good.  I'll let folks know.  Cable TV has pictures every day. I think I heard they closed the embassy.
Paul Robere: Yes, the American Citizens Services (visa, etc) is closed this week.  The Embassy at large remains open with limited staff as it's near the major conflict. Thanks for letting our Dynamos know..
Dru Fuller: You are plenty welcome.

Patsy Cordelle

I was so sorry to hear that Patsy had passed away. I remember her well. She lived near my grandmother when we were kids and we played together. Then when I got to CHS we renewed our friendship in "Stardusters." I lost track of her yrs ago, but she was a great person. It is so sad to hear of the loss of yet another contemporary.

Patsy Cordell Baker was a CHS '58er

I think Patsy was in the class of '58.  --- Susie Turner Crouch

CHS '59er Patsy Cordell Baker passed away April 3

Dru, I was visiting this evening with Diane Cordell Harkelroad who is my son's next door  neighbor.  She is a CHS'er from a class about two years after us.  She is the cousin of Patsy Cordell Baker.  She told me that Patsy had passed away on April 3.  She had a type of Alzheimer's for the last three years.  I do not remember seeing this in the blog, but I do realize that there have been some things I missed.  I know that there are lots of us who remember Patsy since she was in school with us and was drum major, as I remember.  I think she had lived away from Chattanooga for quite some time.

Much love,
Nancy Klein

Classmate Paul Robere in midst of Thailand unrest

Dru Fuller: Paul:  I saw there was unrest in Bangkok Thailand.  Any fallout for you?  Hope you are OK.
Paul Robere: Dru, Thanks for asking..yes, we're in the middle of it. I'm about 6 blocks from the shooting, and the granades being thrown. We've had to close my company early today, and we're closed tomorrow (Saturday)It's sad to see so many  people (who are all Thai) shooting at each other.But.....I've gone through this before, and I'll just keep my head down, and stay out of th e line of fire.
Dru Fuller: Any message you wish to share with your CHS 59 class?  I am class blogger you know
Paul Robere: This will give you some idea of what 's going on: http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE64C0L620100514 take a look at the photo's.You may just say that we're safe, and as much as we think that the USA has problems, being here puts things into perspective when you see someone shot..
Dru Fuller: all talk here ... so far.
Paul Robere: But, I'll just tell them I'm a Dynamo from '59 and they will leave me alone.  They don't waste bullets on old guys. Indeed...well, I hear gun shots outside, so I'd better check to see what 's going on...I'll keep you informed. Thanks for thinking of us out here..Regards from the front..Paul..

...CHSer Harry Johnson

The Tennessean this morning carried Harry Johnson's obituary. Harry graduated from CHS in the Class of 1957, the University of the South in 1961 and Vanderbilt Law School in 1964. I knew Harry when he was at City and in Law School at Vanderbilt. Harry was a Gentleman and a fine lawyer here in Nashville for many years. He died of cancer on May, 2010, but they have not been able to conduct his funeral due to flood damage. Some in our class may remember him.

Chattanooga, Tn 37405-0514

Dear Classmates,

I just spoke to Jerry Potter and read to him the comments on the CHS blog.
He said, “Thanks for thinking of him and Barbara.”
Jerry and Barbara have been married for 45 years and started dating in junior high school! Barbara died of an apparent stroke.
When I asked about arrangements Jerry turned the phone over to his daughter, Audra Potter Parks. Here are the arrangements. There will be no service. In lieu of flowers a memorial contribution may be made to the American Cancer Society.

I, too, am shocked and saddened by Barbara’s death.

We grew up in the same area and went all through school together.

My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

from Linda Rhoden McKinney

Barbara's unexpected death is so sad and my heart goes out to Jerry.

I only got acquainted with them through our reunion planning and always enjoyed there company. I know Jerry will be lost without his life-long partner.

With sincere sympathy, Linda Rhoden McKinney

So sorry to hear about Barbara,

she grew up right up the street from me ,so sad.

from Nathan Pearlman

Oh no, oh no; I am so very sorry. It is so difficult as we grow older to see our classmates and our loved ones leave this earth; why can't we just pass from old age???Jerry, my heart aches and goes out to you. Please, please keep thinking of all the absolute great times the two of you were able to share for so many years. It is so very sad that in reality the time was entirely too short. I along with all of her classmates will miss her very much.

Barbara

I just read about Barbara and am so shocked and saddened. She and Jerry have been a very important part of our reunion committee. My deep sympathy to Jerry.
Carolyn

Barbara Tully Potter

Barbara and Jerry Potter have diligently and lovingly supported the Class of 1959 for years and were so supportive in the 50th Reunion endeavor. As we searched for the location of classmates for two years prior to the reunion, Barbara tirelessly made phone calls to search for classmates.
Several times she mailed to me lists of people she had found.

Our hearts are with Jerry in this time of great loss, and Barbara's presence will me missed by all of us.

Sharon

Sympathy from Gloria Hudson Sutton

I just saw Barbara and Jerry (Potter) at Ryans Friday.

My husband John and I went to their table to talk.  I invited her to come to lunch with the 59ers and she said let her know by phone since she didn't have Internet.

They sounded like there were really enjoying retirement.  We went through Jr Hi and High School together as friends.

My sincere sympathy goes out to Jerry.  Please keep my husband in your prayers.  He has been in the hospital since Mon. with a large blood clog.  Since he is a kidney transplant recipient they have to be careful how they treat it.  They said they were going the safe but slow way.

Barbara Tulley Potter

Barbara Tulley Potter, Jerry's wife and our classmate, died this morning.

According to Sandra King she was working in the yard yesterday and got too hot and fell and hit her head. She did not go to the doctor, thought she was okay. When Jerry awoke this morning she was dead.

My heart goes out to Jerry - let's all keep him in our prayers. I do not know anything about funeral arrangements yet.

CHS '59er Charlotte Mullis-Morgan To Head Chattanooga Election Office

We are so proud of our Dickinson and CHS Classmate.  She was such a deserving candidate.  Linda Rogers Chambers

The Election Commission on Tuesday night voted unanimously to name Charlotte Mullis-Morgan as the new administrator.

Ms. Mullis-Morgan was the chief deputy for seven years to former administrator Bud Knowles, who died in early April. She has been with the office for 28 years.

Mr. Knowles was paid $92,296.

Election Commissioner J.B. Bennett said there were three other applicants - David Cooper of Missionary Ridge, Joseph Kochis of Ooltewah, and Hugh Reece, an official of Juvenile Court.

Chris Clem, attorney for the Election Commission, said the office had been running smoothly under Ms. Mullis-Morgan.

He said state officials strongly encourage all election administrators to take a test to become certified. The state will then pay $16,000 of the salary.

Mike Walden, commission chairman, said it would be imperative to have the administrator to be certified.

Officials said Fran Dzik was the only local election administrator who attained the certification.

Nashville flooded and forgotten

Hi Dru, David, Alvin, and Martha Gail:

So happy to hear from each of you! News pictures from up there show lots of devastation. Keep us updated.

Nashvillians in flood zone

Hi all. Just wondering if anyone was touched by the flood. Send me any story you want to share for the Blog and I'll post it. I think I am on a hill but there is devastation all around here. Susie Turner Crouch has inquired about us. Dru Smith Fuller

Hey Dru...........I am safe here. You are right, the devastation is all around here. It is so hard to believe all that has happened. My cousin lives in Bellevue and all I have been able to here from her is "we're ok". That was yesterday morning so I hope and pray it is still true. I pray that all our classmates are ok. Thanks for checking on me.
Love, Martha Gail Smith

Dru, We live on a hill as well. I was in Cool Springs Saturday when the flash floods hit. I had to walk in water over my shoe tops getting back to my truck.
Love, David Young Parker

Hi, Dru. We were very lucky. No damage at our home, or our son's. I was in Baltimore this weekend for a Fox sibling gathering. I was to return home Sunday afternoon, but Southwest cancelled all their flights to Nashville. I did get back home this afternoon. Take care, and thanks. Alvin Fox
