Tom Wilson's New Year's letter for 2010

Tom and Diane Wilson visit Instanbul
Entrance to the Grand Bazaar

The Wilson family hike in Canada
in Canmore just south of the Banff National Park

Four Wilson grandchildren

2010 was another busy, happy year. Diane is busy with her writing and recently won three awards in the Oklahoma City Writers annual competition, including their top award. She is working on her second novel, while editing her first and pursuing avenues for publication. She and a friend from Dallas are starting a school consulting business. I continue to work full time, commuting weekly to Houston as before.

We had two great trips this year. In April we attended an architects’ conference in Istanbul (see us at the entrance to the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul) followed by visits to Ephesus and Cappadocia in Central Turkey. Added to the exotic trip was a visit to Qatar to find a flight home around the ash cloud.

In July clients of mine loaned us their new Canadian vacation home. The home is in Canmore just south of the Banff National Park. The home looks over a golf course and beyond at the peaks of the Canadian Rockies. With four bedrooms, five and a half baths, plus four bunk beds it seemed designed for our family which included Diane’s sister Kathy. Photos show our four grandchildren and the whole family on one of several strenuous hikes. Everyone voted it the best of the family vacations.

Merry Christmas to All and to All a Good Night

Bill Dickert
Santa was talking to children in the Rome/Cedartown area about 8:15 tonight on the Northwest Georgia ARC repeater. He was using a ham radio installed in his sleigh especially for tonight. Santa talked to 10 or 12 children and a few adults. He said he was over the North Atlantic between Greenland and Nova Scotia. Thank you, Santa. His closing statement was "Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!".
from Bill Dickert's Facebook Post

Dru Fuller OK, what's an ARC repeater?

Bill Dickert @Dru, it means Amateur Radio Club. The Repeater is located on top of Mt. Alto, in Rome, GA. It allows all licensed Amateur Radio operators (AKA hams) to talk to each other easily. Sort of like an old 'party-line' telephone. It is used for personal communication, to support special events like the Santa net last night, and for emergency communications supporting our local EMA's in times of emergency. I got my start in ham radio through the CHS Radio Club long ago.

Subject: Santa net
Dru, I've been playing Santa on ham radio for about ten years. I got started when a close friend asked me to talk to his grandchildren just before Christmas using our radios. The next year we set a schedule and invited all hams to participate. The only requirement is you must be a licensed ham to use the system.

Re: Santa net
Dru, representing Santa on ham radio is a natural extension of my other Santa activities. Twenty five or more years ago a very dear friend twisted my arm a bit and convinced me to 'represent' Santa at his church. I had an absolute blast. One thing led to another and I now have regular gigs at several local churches. I'm now talking to the children of the kids I talked to when I began. The kids are awesome. Some are a little nuts, but, so were we. Merry Christmas!

Happy Christmas Anniversary!

Gail and Bob Atkins
49 years of marriage

‎51 years ago, this cute little guy kept following me around the Austin Peay campus. After a few weeks I finally decided to let him catch me. 2 years later we were married and the rest is history. Happy 49th anniversary to the best husband I ever had... and I'm thinking seriously about keeping him. He is One in a Million!!!!  ---via Gail's Facebook post

'59ers Reunion Committee holiday party

"It's the most wonderful time of the year" and when the CHS classmates get
together at the holiday time it is indeed a very special time.

Susie Turner Crouch hosted the Chattanooga reunion committee at her
sparkling holiday home on Dec. 21. There were twinkling lights, a profusion
of ruby poinsettias and all the charming decorations that you would expect
of Susie's place.

Susie provided two fabulously delicious soups and the guests filled in the
rest of the menu to make a savory winter feast. Classmates were sparkling
too in their festive garb.

Classmates attending, ( I hope I don't leave anyone out!) were Linda McKinney, Carolyn
Darr, Sandra King, Linda McKinney, Gaynell Smith, Lloyd Stanley, Kent Smith,
Lew & Ann Waddy, Vicki D. White, Anne Johnson, and Susie.

The night was one of the most wonderful times of my year. ---Anne Johnson

Merry Christmas to CHS '59ers from Jim Wade

Merry Christmas to the class of 59!!

For a holiday smile, visit: White Christmas

This rendition of White Christmas was recorded by Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters in 1953.  It was #2 on the charts in 1954.  Animation is by Joshua Held in 2002.

White Christmas was written by Irving Berlin for the Movie "Holiday Inn" and recorded by Bing Crosby in 1942, and received the Academy Award in that year.  Crosby recorded it again in 1947, and that recording has become the standard.  It was also featured in the 1954 movie White Christmas with Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera-Ellen.

White Christmas is the biggest selling Christmas song of all time. ---Your classmate Jim Wade

Happy B'Day Bill Cross

Bill Cross with classmate Susie Crouch
Bill Cross is celebrating his birthday today, Dec. 20. Contact him at billcross00@aol.com to wish him a happy birthday. Here's an excerpt from what Bill wrote to us about his life back in April 2009:

Most of my career has been in the Telecommunications industry. I was Regional Marketing Manager with AT&T until 1987 when I became a partner and President of North American Telephone Company. We sold the company to MCI in 1995 and I decided to become a developer and bought the land surrounding the Country Club of Sebring. We were very fortunate and developed the property and sold out in 2004 just before the bottom fell out of the market. I continued to partnership on other projects in the State up until this past year when I decided to try and retire. My wife and I just celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary. We have two children, a son and daughter. They each have two children ranging in age from 4 to 7 years old. My son is Senior Director of Augusta National and my daughter and her family are cattle ranchers in Lakeland Florida.

CHS '59ers Nashville Christmas lunch

Martha Gail Smith, Dru Smith Fuller,
Phyllis Morris Frank, Alvin Fox,
Melanie Sissie Bowen Hampton,
David  Young Parker
Nashville CHSers are really going places and doing things this holiday season.

Martha Gail Smith is flying to Southern California for a reunion with her goddaughter.  The two had lost track of each other until Gail happened to check the Internet.  She found her goddaughter, called her and they made Christmas plans together.

Phyllis Morris Frank is on a cruise with her husband to the Panama Canal, spending time in Miami and Aruba on the way.

Alvin Fox is visiting his grandchildren in Atlanta --- a trip he often takes.

David Young Parker began the Season of Hope by attending the Titan's latest debacle.  Or maybe he went because he has those once-coveted season tickets.

Melanie Sissie Bowen Hampton is preparing for a new administration at the State Capitol.  She retired as deputy director for Tennessee's mental health agency but still contributes her talents as a consultant.

Dru Smith Fuller and her husband are planning to eat Christmas dinner with the troops at Ft. Campbell.  The base is quiet now as so many troops from Ft. Campbell are presently on those government paid trips to the Middle East.
