Harold Newman |
Harold Newman has announced his plans to retire from the presidency of Shorter University in Rome, Georgia, on May 31, 2011. Harold has served as president of the Georgia Baptist institution since January 2006; he was also interim president for one year and Shorter’s chief academic officer for 20 years.
During his tenure as president, Harold led the Shorter community to achieve several important goals, including the June 1, 2010, transition to university status. Other significant accomplishments were establishing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program; increasing enrollment from 2547 in 2004 to 3,775 in the fall of 2010; adding new majors in sport management and instrumental music, online courses and degree programs, a marching band and several intercollegiate sports.
Shorter has also established programs to strengthen student success and to assist with the transition to college, increased its percentage of students taking part in study-abroad opportunities, and expanded its facilities through on-campus construction and off-campus partnerships. In 2007, Shorter built a new student apartment building, which the trustees named Newman Hall in honor of Harold’s contributions to Shorter.
After his retirement, Harold will become president emeritus of Shorter University. He leaves the institution at a point in which both enrollment and retention are at record high levels and the university’s reputation for excellence in the liberal arts, fine and performing arts, the sciences, education, and business are continuing. Shorter also has a growing reputation for excellence in intercollegiate athletics.
