Hot date for the senior/senior prom

Anne Johnson is going to her senior/senior prom!

I am a-flutter with excitement just as I was in '59 when I was preparing to go to graduation festivities and my senior prom. Actually. . . I'm more excited now than I was then. I've got a "hot date" with 240 people!

Don't let the rain forecast dampen your spirits. A 40% chance of rain means that there is 60% chance that it won't rain! Come with an umbrella and dance between the raindrops! We got plenty of indoor games planned!

We have had a good time planning for the reunion and providing an interesting weekend for all of us. While in the process of planning we have rekindled and forged new friendships. I've got plenty of conversation starters from the blog, and when I run out of things to say, I'll dance or drink some of the donated beer or wine! AND too, Stars from our own class will entertain us. It is shaping up to be an exciting weekend.

I look forward to being with you--all of you--new and old friends. What a super reunion we are going to have. We've got a hot date!

In this map you can see that the streets from down town where the hotel is located is one way going away from town. Closest parking now is behind the school where the track was.

Reunion planning meeting on July 17th

I think you can see from the look on Kent's face, that we had a very good time at our last reunion planning meeting on July 17th at the Choo Choo! There are more photos on the blog, too. I do want to emphasize that all classmates are invited to the planning meetings and all are welcome to volunteer to make our upcoming 50th reunion a smashing success.

We gathered on July 17th in the hospitality room where we will "meet and greet" during the reunion next May. Anne Johnson welcomed all and gave special thanks to Dru who came from Nashville and continues to be our webmaster and to Sharon who came from Houston and does a super job tracking mailing addresses. She passed around a spreadsheet of those addresses and e-mails we have up to now.

We discussed and agreed on a procedure to get all lined up for upcoming events. We will have chairmen for various activities and duties; those chairpersons will select committee members and report to Anne and all at the meetings.

Vicki Daniel White agreed to head up the decoration comm; we have a theme of "stars." ('59 shines) Linda Rhoden McKinney agreed to chair the hospitality suite with Sandra Belk King as co-chair. They will recruit helpers to man the suite and also line up snacks and drinks for the suite.

Kent Smith and Vicki will "meet and greet" as attendees come in. Reservations will be made by sending in checks in advance.

Ann and Lew Waddey couldn't attend but have agreed to make name tags for the reunion.
We will investigate getting a photographer for Sat evening's banquet.

Nancy Poole Klein is in charge of the scholarship to honor Katherine Pryor. It is to be given thru UTC and will be for a deserving English student. UTC will handle the $ and the selection. If you are interested in knowing more, contact Nancy at NKLEIN0918@aol.com.

Susie Turner Crouch is our treasurer and announced that we have $2100 in our acc't and $400 more pledged. Because we are only charging $59 for Fri and Sat evenings total, we appreciate all the donations we can get. There will be expenses for mailings, printing, decorations, etc, etc in addition to meals.

We went over the itinerary and made the following change. The wine, women and girl talk party with Dian Warren Hodge will be Sat afternoon instead of Fri.

I will send the itinerary for the reunion separately and it is also on the blog.

Dian Warren Hodge visited Chattanooga and over lunch, met with an ad hoc committee of fun loving women to discuss the workshop, Wine, Women and What's New! scheduled for Friday afternoon of the reunion. Some topics discussed were fashion, make up and health issues for women who have matured just like the wine (which we will sample) that has gotten better with a little age!

I do have a 'mug shot' somewhere, that I used for an op-ed piece in the Knoxville paper last year. Let me see if I can find it.

Wayne and I were actually good friends in Jr. Hi. We even double-dated a couple of times, because he was just enough older than I that he had his license a few months before I. Somewhere around the time of the 40th I did have some e-mail exchanges with him and sent him a copy of the composite class picture from our Brainerd graduation, but nothing recently.

I was able to get onto the blog!

What a wonderful career. Again, I'm proud of you and our school. Did you attend classes with Wayne Clough, now the head of the Smithsonian? So many of CHS grads were able to move into the sciences. Something was right about the school as well as the students.

If you have memories of either your teachers or fellow students, I would be happy to get them posted on the blog too.

Please send a picture ASAP, to Dru Fuller, our webmaster, If not she'll just post your message.

Also please confirm that you were able to get on the blog.It's so much fun!

Thank you both so much for such a warm and gracious 'welcome back.'

I actually went from one CHS 59 to another CHS 59 (Clawson High School, Clawson, MI). So I've got two such 'memory lanes', which is fascinating in and of itself.

After graduation, I came back to TN for undergraduate school at what was then Memphis State U, now U of M. I got my BS there with a double major in math and physics. I also met my wife there, and we got married right after I graduated.

I then went to graduate school at Johns Hopkins, where I got my Masters and PhD in physics.

Virtually all my work has been in military-related advanced technology development. First with GE, then a small company in northern VA. In 1995 I started my own company. We provide technical support (the private sector would call it consulting) exclusively to DoD Program Managers in the DoD Chem/Bio Defense Program. In our case that specifically means we work on sensor programs to provide systems that give advance warning of an attack by bio warfare materials.

We have two sons, one is an IT person for a large international company. The other is career military, and currently is in his fourth tour of duty in Iraq. This one has a daughter, and a son who was supposed to make his appearance last Thursday, but we are still awaiting!

That's why I am currently working out of my place in east TN.

In my 'spare' time I try to play golf occasionally, and am actively involved in efforts to raise awareness and mitigate global warming/climate change.

I will indeed try to stay in touch.

I was a member of CHS 59, but did not graduate with it. I was in Chattanooga area schools, grades 1-11: grade 1 in Rossville, then Missionary Ridge, Anna B. Lacey, Brainerd JHS, and CHS.
But in the late winter/early spring of '58 my father was transferred from Chattanooga to Detroit. The family stayed in CHA thru the end of that school year, but in the summer of '58 we moved to a suburb of DTW, where I graduated in '59.

I did return to CHA for the class graduation ceremony in '59.

However, with the exception of driving thru CHA on my way to graduate school in late summer of '63, that was my last time in CHA until the late '90s.

Sometime in the late '90s Mickey and I reestablished contact, and I got back to CHA to visit with him. He even talked me into attending the '99 reunion.

Now we actually do spend significant time in TN (I am driving there tomorrow), because I've got a retirement place in Townsend. And one of our sons is in the military, stationed at Ft. Campbell, and he and his family live in Clarksville.

I could not find the clock! I am sending pictures of the wooden lockers which have been refinished and some have plaques with names on them (memorials and donations). All of the original old wooden doors are still there. When Erlanger Nursing School used the building, they painted the lockers and then Riverside High did who knows what to them. They look nice now though. The metal lockers are all still there also.

I took a picture of the plaque in the front foyer with the info about the original building and a picture of Colonel Bates.

The auditorium seems to have the same seats and some of them are still broken. They have made an outer lobby area that looks really nice. The school still smells the same. The old bookstore is still in place with the window. I suppose they still use it the same way although it was not open. I had forgotten all about it.

They have some really neat things going on now that we missed out on. They are still doing the musicals on the stage and have one coming up in April. I sent a picture of a window where they actually do math problems on the glass. This was in the middle school. The canopy over the walk to the gym is gone and picnic tables are along the way. The cafeteria brought back memories of each club having their own tables and groups. I also remembered eating potato chips, potato salad and milk every day at lunch. "Very nutritious." This saved time because it could be bought in the back of the cafeteria without going through the long line.

The bottom floor is the lower school of K-5, the second floor or entrance is the middle school floor and the third floor is grades 9-12. The fourth floor has been condemned. The old library is still there but there is another one for the lower grades. I believe it is where the home economics classes were.
The gym still looks basically the same except the bleachers have been replaced with the folding plastic ones. I believe they were wooden when we were there. The gym was quite new when we were there since it was built in 1955.

I sent a picture of the molded stairs they went to the cafeteria. I had forgotten about them. I also remembered the one-way stairs. It is interesting that the football field was built the year I was born and most of our class.

Sorry this took so long but I waited until Spring Break so that I could have access without so many students being in the hallways. I have the disc ready to mail tomorrow. Hopefully, you will get it by Friday. Let me know what you think. Apparently I sent this from Richard's e-mail address and I don't check it very often. Please use linda_chambers@comcast.net.

Yes, I did get the info about Wayne Clough. I was impressed that he had been President at Georgia Tech but this is even more so. I'm not sure I remember him though. I did look him up in the annual and he seemed a little familiar.

I am so happy to hear from you. I've been wondering what was going on with you. Did you hear that a classmate of our Wayne Clough has been named to be the head of the Smithsonian?

I have a history of the school and the center part was built in 1922 and named Wyatt Hall. The two wings were added in 1935. The football field was completed in 1941 and the gym in 1955. So. . the building is old but lives in our memories. Do they still have lockers?

This will be very interesting to see. Did you have any special memories as you walked around? Is the clock still there?

I am copying Dru Fuller so she's be expecting something from us soon.

I have a CD of some pictures I took at the school. I am going to mail it to you because there are a lot of pictures that you can choose from (or not). You will also have a hard copy at hand if you need it. I know there is a list of addresses somewhere but I can't find it. Please send me your's so I can get this in the mail.

The school is pretty dark and older than I remembered (ha). They are doing a lot of work in anticipation of a critique from a magnet school committee next month so the auditorium wasn't in good shape and is darker than any.

The football field is now a soccer field and some of the classrooms are for tiny kindergarteners.

It was very interesting. I guess the least change was in the cafeteria but there is a television and lots of vending machines. There are even vending machines in the high school area of the school.

This was fun and I got lots of exercise.
