Minutes-'59 class 70th b'day party
CHS CLASS OF '59
70TH BIRTHDAY PARTY PLANNING MEETING
MINUTES
From the July 22, 2010 meeting
This meeting was held at Vicki Daniel White's home and was chaired by Anne Johnson.  Also attending were Linda Rhoden McKinney, Susie Turner Crouch, Kenneth Peterson, Nathan Pearlman, Gloria Hudson Sutton, Carolyn Thomas Presswood, Linda Rogers Chambers, Carolyn Tuley Darr, Nancy Poole Klein, Sharon Barker Tunnell, Gaynell Hixson Smith, Ann Tyer and Lew Waddey, Kent Smith, Barbara Dalton Warner, and guests Jim McKinney and David Weidner.
Anne discussed themes in terms of a 70th birthday party and mentioned that depending on the venue other themes were possible.  The general consensus is that we want to have a place where we can go, relax, and have fun visiting.  Our primary focus at this meeting is to select a venue and date to be advertised to all classmates ASAP.
As treasurer, Susie Turner Crouch stressed that we have money to plan a really nice party.
Several places were discussed briefly including The Mill, Loose Cannon, the Methodist Episcopal Church at the corner of MLK and Lindsey, Camp Dixie, and Manker Patten.  We discussed the Island Cove Marina (old Loret) in more detail because as a resort it has many advantages including motel rooms and cottages, a pavilion, restaurant, meeting rooms and boat docks all in one place.  Despite many attractive features, however, it is out on the lake away from other attractions, and the weather might not cooperate.
Our discussion then focused on downtown venues because of the many attractions, restaurants, and hotels.  The Bessie Smith venue emerged as our first choice. The rental fee is $700. Susie will book the facility in early summer probably in June.
By using Bessie Smith we can hire our own caterer and supply our own liquor.  We will hire a bartender and cleanup crews to supplement the caterer's staff as needed.  Also we plan to have a DJ and dance, but decorations will be minimal and inexpensive.
Other activities will probably emerge as planning goes forward, and hosts/hostesses will be needed for any "official" activities.  Also there may be " informal" meal plans; for example, some may want to meet and visit in small groups.  We did stress that communications need to go to all classmates, and some information should go by "snail" mail for any who may not have access to the Internet.  These activities will depend on people arriving on Friday and staying on Sunday.
Included in communications needs to be a registration form with a small charge to encourage classmates to commit to this birthday bash.  We will need a classmate to prepare this form; possibly someone who does not live in Chattanooga could be responsible for this. Dru Smith Fuller is covered up with the blog, so we need a volunteer.  Sharon Barker Tunnell will update the directory as needed; she mentioned that printing really needs to be done locally.  Another very important component of communication among classmates is the email address list!  Carolyn Thomas Presswood is in charge of this list, so please inform her on any changes at Carolyn.presswood@coldwellbanker.com.
The "Lunch Bunch" will meet August 26, the fourth Thursday, and Gaynell Hixson Smith invited us back on their boat for October 28.
Anne stressed that we all had such a wonderful reunion last year and we need to make our birthday party just as appealing and inviting to everybody.  Our goal is for all to have fun and to visit with old friends.
                                                                                     Respectfully submitted,
                                                                                     Barbara D. Warner
ADDENDUM
Susie Turner Crouch has booked the Bessie Smith Hall for June 4, 2011.
Charley Wheeler has volunteered to assist in the PR for the party by designing the flyer and postcard. We still need to work out the mailing procedures.

Bill Dickert's back from his mission trip
Bill Dickert We returned today from a very successful Mission Trip to Nicaragua. We were part of a construction team. We re-roofed a church in Ocotal, rewired and repainted the Ocotal Sanctuary and painted the pastor's residence inside and out.. Wonderfully satisfying work. We're exhausted but spiritually fulfilled.

Anita Balfour Collins--Happy Birthday.  I'm an old Ridgedale girl, but I did go to kindergarten at Lutheran School and then 5th and 6th grade at Tennessee Temple Grammar School, so I have been in and around Highland Park for most of my life.  The two areas were wonderful places to grow up, have fun, and make good memories.  Hope you have a very happy birthday.  And a  "yes", to both you and David.  What I wouldn't give for a box of Sarah Jane Donuts everytime I go by the old shop on McCallie Avenue.  Nancy Klein

For Trudy Walker Moore - HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Didn't realize our birthdays were just six days apart.  Hope your day is one that forms a happy memory!  You were so sweet to mail a card to me - I loved getting it.  As I told you at the reunion, you are still a beautiful lady, inside and out.  I am still celebrating - guess I'm having a two-week party.  Our CA children left yesterday, so now I have a couple of friends who were waiting for their departure for us to plan birthday celebration lunches.  Life is good.

70th birthday party
So have I and here is a response I sent to the Steinmann's. What do you think?
Hey James and Judy,
Thanks for your input. I agree about the 2 day for folks coming in from far away.  My thinking is that whoever wants to come in on Friday have a dutch treat wherever we want to go - I'd love to have us come to my house for a cocktail and then go out to eat - just not a planned event. I found that some folks couldn't afford two nights of hotel, etc. - So, we'll definitely have a gathering on Friday night  but the birthday party an all day something or another on Saturday - does that sound alright to ya'll. Both of you were such supporters of the 50th that I really want to represent what you want.  Susie Turner Crouch
70th birthday party
I have gotten back several interesting responses to my e-mail about the meeting.  I will bring them to the meeting.  Dian Warren Hodges wants to know if we want to come to Vegas for bday celebration!  The out of towners all seem to favor a 2 day deal, but I think they all appreciate our efforts and will enjoy anything we do. I personally think that would be a bit much after our big 50th, but I guess that is what I get for asking. Nathan Pearlman looks for Charley Wheeler at 70th B'Day
Charley (Wheeler), 700 miles away or not, it is just good to hear from you and whatever we do for the 70th, look forward to seeing you and your wife.
 Nathan (Pearlman)
Compliment from Charley Wheeler
Carolyn (Presswood),
Thanks for getting the party started (or continuing?). Since I live in the Philly area I won't be able to attend the planning meeting on the 22nd and haven't really given any thought to what the party should be like. I'm inclined, however, to suggest a two day event, so that if people's schedules don't allow participation on one day maybe they can at least make part of the party.
We recently went to my wife's 50th reunion and she mentioned that we are having a collective birthday party and it might be fun for her class to do too. Reply was "that's too much work." Turns out that her class reunion committee (class about the same size as ours) consisted of two or three people, only one of whom apparently did much work. Thanks to everybody who has worked so hard to keep our class going. Not sure how helpful I can be from 700 miles away, but willing to do what I can so please keep me posted.

Hey Nathan (Pearlman),  We sure missed you at the Hancock 59ers on July 4th.  I will send pictures later.  Can/t make the 22nd as I will be in Bulgaria at the invitation of  my Bulgarian son in law.  We are going to visit his extended family, grandfathers farm etc.   Should be interesting.  They live in a small village several hours from Sofia, the capital.  My grandaughter is also named Sofia.  All the news from Sparta, GA.  Robert Currey
Lew Waddey to celebrate his B'Day July 9
Dru, Lew (Waddey) will join the rest of us who have had birthdays so far this year.  His is Friday, 7-9-10.  As he pointed out to me when my birthday was last month, on your 69th birthday you begin living in your 70th year!   There are obviously two ways to look at that and I think he will choose to celebrate!  Thanks for keeping us all in touch.  Love, Ann (Waddey)

Louella Cherry Spencer: Thanks for the birthday wishes
Hello,I have had such a wonderful birthday. Saturday Bill and I went to Chicago to meet up with our son and daughter-in-law who flew there from CA. Saturday afternoon we did Taste of Chicago from one end to the other. We saw the view from the Hancock Building. We then rode the boat all around. That night we ate late and fell asleep soon after eating. Sunday we went to a Cubs game and saw the Reds make many homeruns. Then we went to a favorite place to eat called the John Barleycorn. That night we watched fireworks. Monday we went to the aquarium and then came home after lunch, arriving in time for dinner and the Carmel firework, which were better than the Chicago fireworks. Tuesday night Jennifer provided a picnic at the Fishers park where an Elvis impersonator said he wished Louella a happy birthday. My grandson, Eric, who is 15 had 12 friends who sang with Eric another Happy Birthday to Eric's grandmother. Today I had a luncheon with family and friends which I enjoyed very much. Then Bill, John, Diana, Jennifer, Eric, Greg, Lauren, Emily and I went to the 3D Toy Story movie. Now John and Diana have gone to eat with friends connected with John's Purdue life. Tomorrow we will have more plans. God is Good to provide family and friends. Thanks for your birthday wishes.Love,Louella Cherry Spencer bsls317@indy.rr.com
July 22 Meeting Follow-up
Following up on Anne's blog post, I have talked to Vicki White and she wants to have the meeting at her house since she is closing down her shop. Vicki is centrally located in the Southside not far from her shop off Main Street. Directions will be sent later. As in the past, bring an appetizer or not but do BYOB! This meeting will be casual and social with the main thing in mind to be 'what do we want and where?
I've talked to Margaret Llewellen and she feels the same as I do - having an all day one day gathering. Yes, we'd love for anyone who wanted to to come in on Friday and we can meet and have dinner, that sort of thing - just not a planned event. Some people who live nearby may want to come just on Saturday and not have a 2 day hotel expense.
Ken Peterson may come to the meeting (I hope so), Nathan plans to come, David P plans to come, Sharon is coming, Bill Cross may come - hope a lot of you will come, it's gonna be fun.
Hope to see alot of you on the 22nd. If not send your ideas.
 Love from North Chattanooga,
 Susie Turner Crouch

discussion/meeting. We will announce the place shortly. Please keep posted
on the blog for the location.
On 7/22 we plan to discuss what kind of birthday party is desired by the
majority. Several have suggested a casual place where we can "hang out" on a
Saturday and if possible have a sock hop Sat. evening. Finding a place for
this is a problem; do you know where we could go? Out of town folks
suggested that the party get started on Friday evening at a hotel/motel with
a casual dinner/buffet.
Come to the meeting and let your opinion be heard. Otherwise, reply to the
blog before the meeting so that your proposal can be discussed at the
meeting.
Our class has had a series of difficulties lately so please make the effort
to come and enjoy our friendship and support.
I am so grateful to be a member of such a caring group.

Symphathy from Wendy & Nathan Pearlman,,,
It seems like our 59 class is having a bad run of luck these past few months. Linda and Jim, once again words just aren't enough to take away the pain, but with the many, many friends you have and who care about you, their wishes might help you both.
I totally understand when you say "finally at peace." Wendy and I watched her father suffer with Alzheimer"s disease for 6 years also, and when the end come, you do know they are finally at peace.
 Take care

Wonderful time on the CHS house boat ride June 24. The weather was warm going over but perfect on return trip. Met at Harrison Bay Marina and took about an hour's scenic ride over to Ari's Harbor Lights Restaurant in Soddy-Daisy. We all enjoyed a wonderful seafood meal and Linda McKinney and her husband, Jim, and Sandra King and her husband, Jesse, joined us there. After dinner we took them for a short ride before they returned to the dock and drove home and we continued on back to Harrison Bay.
Wish you all could have joined us. ---Linda Rogers Chambers
