Update on Shuttle Bus Directions

The number of reservations is knocking us out! WOW!

We are thrilled, of course, but it IS presenting some logistic challenges. One of those is the parking on Fri night, so in order to alleviate major congestion, AND RUNNING OUT OF PARKING SPACES,

WE ARE HIRING A SHUTTLEBUS TO TAKE US TO HERITAGE LANDING ON FRI NIGHT.
THERE WILL BE 2 BUS STOPS, ONE AT THE CHOO CHOO AND ONE AT GPS. WE WILL BEGIN LOADING AT 5:30 AT THE CHOO CHOO. We will load at the hotel entrance, not at the terminal. There is a parking lot behind the hotel for your cars.
The 2nd stop will be at the GPS Lower Field at 5:45.
DO NOT GO INTO THE GPS MAIN ENTRANCE; THAT WON'T GET YOU THERE.
THE BUS WILL STOP AT THE LOWER FIELDS
DIRECTIONS:
FROM FRAZIER AVE TURN RIGHT ONTO TREMONT OR TAMPA; TURN LEFT ONTO RIVER ST. THE FIELDS PARKING WILL BE ON YOUR LEFT.

Today's results:  Charles Turner stopped by this morning with his money for the reunion as well as Cathy Barker - Mickey forgot to mail it in! Glad they are both coming and appreciate the donation. Then the mail came - Mary Dove Crumbliss is coming Friday night and Jerry Ingram and his wife Mary are coming and sent a very nice donation. Thank you Jerry. I heard from my good friend, Robert Curry, who is coming Saturday only as well as Carolyn Shumate Gash - they both included a generous donation. We're so glad Anne Chalkley and Marsh are coming. Mary Helen McDaris Mertz is coming with her sister and we appreciate her donation too. And, lastly, our very own David Parker. sent in his check and donation addressed to "The Last of the Red Hot Mamas" - not sure I qualify!!!! He makes me LOL!
Thank you, David.

Magic Moment- Your Arrival- 50th Reunion- May 15,16,17

Your arrival is greatly anticipated! 'See you soon!

More About Brian Moore

I, Louella Cherry Spencer, after watching Brian Moore's commercial advertisement, mentioned to him that it appeared to me that he has made it into the "big time."  If you watch his commercial, www.pcclub.net/brian, you will probably think the same.  It shows that he has done many ads other than the ones he will tell you about.  Here are his words:  "I have appeared in a U.S. print ad about erectile dysfunction (not promoting it but suggesting that my doctor's clinic can help). I've appeared in a Costa Rican print ad at a zoo with a family of Coatimundis, (hard for even people who know me to tell the difference). I've amazed friends as the on-camera spokesman promoting Costa Rica's passage of C.A.F.T.A.  But what really brought me to the pinnacle of my success was a television commercial that aired in the U.S., Canada and Germany - for five years, advertising Johnson & Johnson's 'Hugs' (their adult diaper)."

Brian goes on to say, "So you see, it has not been by dearth of effort that has brought me to where I am today, but another classic case where, once again dear friends, 'ignorance and superstition have triumphed over skill and cunning'.  Beyond this, I know nothing, nor will I admit to anything.   Living in Costa Rica, I don't get to the planning meetings. Due to old age, I can't remember where I parked the car. Ups! I just remembered - I don't have a car!"

So, it appears to me that we will be entertained by our DJ at the dinner/dance at the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club.

Coming from Huntsville, Alabama

Trudy Walker Moore and husband, Bill.

Trudy sent the following note to Louella Cherry Spencer:

Bill and I have been married 48 years.  We met in Nashville where he was in medical school at Vanderbilt.  I graduated from David Lipscomb University with a major in speech and a minor in Bible.  (I preach a little at home.)

We have lived 41 years in Huntsville, AL where Bill has had a practice in pathology.  We have a daughter and a son and five precious grandchildren, who all live in Huntsville.

After Bill's retiring, we were blessed to go to Cuba where we were allowed to teach the Bible.  We have traveled there six times and have met some wonderful people.  I enjoy coordinating a weekly Bible class for the ladies in the inner city at the Church of Christ in Huntsville.

I am very excited about seeing my CHS classmates and catching up on their lives.  A big thanks to the committee for all they have done to make this reunion happen.

See you there,
Trudy Walker Moore

Ok! So, I didn't get many reservations yesterday! Obviously, the postman was teasing me. Today, I heard from George LaFerry who is coming with his wife Dot and who included a very generous donation. Delmar Reynolds who had already registered just wanted to "help out" sent us an equally generous donation. Thanks, guys! Martie McEwan Ulmer and hubby are coming and included an donation. David Sandlin and friend are coming and signed up for almost everything as well as a super-duper donation. Betty Anderson Dunn is coming and so is Janet McBirney and hubby. Yay!

Then, I had the sweetest note from John Hayes. John's wife, Cheryl, has been sick and that is where he has been focusing his attention. (he forgot to send in his registration!) John goes on to say "I do so look forward to seeing all of our classmates that will be attending Friday an Saturday. Some of these I have not seen in the 50 years since we graduated, and I will enjoy so much seeing them again and being able to visit with them.

I think all of the committee have worked so hard (yes, we have) and done such a great job of putting this reunion together. I have a younger sister who attended the new City High School and she is always reminding me of how lucky I was to be in the class of '59. And she is so right. We had the best high school and class ever."

Now how sweet was that and I totally agree with him.

Arnold Ellison said we had 450 in our class. If we subtract the deceased (47), we will have nearly 30% of our class there. That is truly outstanding and a testament to the very, very hard work of each of you! And there are still two weeks to go!!! There are going to be an awful lot of single people there. Maybe out of this reunion we will have a rekindling of romance. I remember staying Saturday night at Lew Waddey's during our 25th. I didn't see him again until the next morning. I'm sure he and Ann just talked all night and lost track of time.

I've been getting messages from Classmates saying people have tried to send me messages but since I am not a "Gold Member" they won't let me see who they are. Is there any way you could put a message out to people saying that if they are trying to contact me to do so at: cindy.wilson13@verizon.net and not at the Classmates Web Site? I would sure appreciate it.

Thanks.

Fw: Since leaving CHS

----- Original Message -----

Subject: Since leaving CHS

Oh my goodness.............how do I put fifty years into a few words!  After graduation from Middle Tennessee State University in l963, I taught elementary school for four years, then returned to MTSU and earned my Master's of Education degree.  While in graduate school, I met my sweetheart, Gene..............a dashing young lieutenant in the Air Force.  We were married in December of 1968.

In December of 1974, we were blessed with a wonderful son, Andrew.  He and his wife, Jessica, and two beautiful little girls, Leah and Jeanna, live in Charleston, IL, where Dr. Andrew teaches at Eastern IL University.

As the wife of a (27 year) career AF Officer, life was always interesting and exciting - filled with travel and fun experiences around the world.   When I retired from teaching in 2003, with about a hundred years in the classroom, I had taught in seven states, England and the Republic of Panama.  We had always planned to return to TN to retire - our goal being to retire in '03, but in July of 2002, Gene died unexpectedly in his sleep of a massive heart attack.  We had lived  in New Mexico for 14 years at that time, so I finished my last year of teaching and then returned to TN alone.

Living in TN again has been great..................until April 10, when an EF-4 tornado struck Murfreesboro.  As I was hiding in the linen closet, my home and property took a hard hit, causing thousands of dollars worth of damage.  It will take many weeks of repair, inside and out, but things are moving along..............new roof, fence, garage door, front porch being rebuilt tomorrow, etc., but my neighborhood will never look the same.  Most of the trees are gone................I lost more than a dozen in my own yard.............the three houses behind me are being bulldozed, the one beside me was taken down today, with removal work going on on the one across the street starting today.  A young lady and her nine week old baby died in the storm..............they lived across the street from the back of my property - their home was completely blown away.  I am so grateful for the comparatively small amount of damage................mine can be repaired.................if you are inclined to pray, many  folks in Murfreesboro surely would appreciate being remembered in your prayers.

As I write this, I still have wooden windows (I lost about a dozen windows............trying to clean glass out of the carpet is a little like trying to nail jello to the wall.......bits and pieces everywhere!), but I decided windows or no windows, I'm going to try my best to make the reunion.  I dropped my reservation form in the mail this afternoon.  I look forward to seeing all of your familiar, wiser and more mature faces....................what fun to rub elbows with old friends again!
Mary Helen McDaris Mertz

My Thanks Again to Dru

I just want to tell Dru again how much I appreciate her setting up the blog for our class.  Because of the blog, we have done some catching up before the reunion.  By doing so, I think we will all enjoy the reunion more.  Those of us who have studied the blog will recognize classmates faster and have some idea about how the last 50 years have been for our classmates.  I'll speak for our class and say, "We salute you, Dru."

John Hayes Checks In

John Hayes sent the following message to Louella Cherry Spencer:

Hi Louella,

Thanks for "bugging" me again, as I am not big on pictures, as I am usually the one behind the camera taking the pictures. However, I did find the attached picture of my daughter Felicia and myself on a cruise a little over a year ago.

As you may know, I live in Atlanta. After graduation from CHS I attended and graduated from Ga Tech, where I served as student body president my senior year, and this enabled me to meet some prestigious bankers in the Atlanta area. Also, I was sent to Russia by the  US State  Department, and this too enabled me to become involved in the financial world.

I went to work for First National Bank of Atlanta as administrative assistant to the Chairman of the Board upon graduation. That I believed was the start of a very promising banking career, but because of Viet Nam the draft board had other ideas. I was sent to officers candidate school in Newport, R. I. where, after becoming the regimental commander (thanks to my ROTC training at CHS) of the school, I became an aid for foreign admirals and captains at the Naval War College in Newport, R. I. for about six months, and then served two tours of duty in Viet Nam, as a gunnery officer and then as a navigator.

While in the Navy I married Cheryl Sammons from Atlanta, having met her while at Ga Tech, and we spent our "first" honeymoon driving from Atlanta to San Diego, where my ship was stationed. Upon my honorable discharge from the US Navy I took a job in California as a stock broker, and decided to specialize in options, which at that time were relatively unknown by most investors, both individual and institutional.

Some how, with a lot of hard work, and some luck, in 1973 I was featured in a full page article in Business Week magazine about my expertise in options. As this is an international publication, and interest was beginning to build in options because the Chicago Board Options Exchange had just come into operation, I was fortunate to get clients from around the world. Thus began my career in international finance.

My daughter, Felicia, was born in California, but in 1976 we moved back to Atlanta, as I missed the South East. I set up my own financial service business and have never worked for any one since. Two years later my son John  was born. We have been happily married now for 41 years.

I am certainly looking forward to seeing our class mates that will be attending, many of whom  I have not seen since our graduation 50 years ago.
Best regards,

John Hayes

George Derryberry and wife, Sharon, will attend reunion
(picture)

After CHS, I entered UT in Knoxville in 1959, graduating in 1963. I then entered the U.S. Marine Corps, and served 3 years active duty as an officer in the 2nd Marine Division. Semper Fi!  I returned to UT in the fall of 1966, and received a law degree in 1969. I came back to Chattanooga, and joined a large law firm, practicing as a partner until I opened my own law office in 1990, where I still am practicing. Along the way I also formed a local country rock band, did a good bit of cowboying, and served in Chattanooga's Marine Reserve unit, "Mike Battery" for a few years as Executive Officer. At present I am working on a book about a World War II Marine killed on Iwo Jima. I live on Signal Mountain with my wife, Sharon. My/our kids have given us 8 grandchildren whom we are busy spoiling, with another grandchild on the way. Life is good!

Best regards,

George Derryberry

Correction on the minutes

I don't think I was detailed enough or clear enough (or accurate enough) about the Memory Book and the Directory.
The directory and memory book are two separate publications. The directory is a joint effort of Sharon and Tom Wilson and his staff. It contains names, addresses, a '59 pic and a recent pic if one was sent in. The cover of the directory was desgined by Tom and is similar to the '59 Dynamo and is spiral bound. Ea. classmate attending the reunion will receive the directory free.

The Memory Book will be produced by Tucker Photography who will take the pics at the banquet. Portraits will be made of those who choose to. The memory book will contain the Class photo on the steps as well as other groups, such as Jr Highs.

Thanks, Anne, for unravelling that for me.

We had an enthusiastic 23 attendees at our reunion planning meeting on Thurs, April, 23rd at the Choo Choo. Those present were; Anne Johnson and guest, David Weidner, Carolyn Thomas Presswood, Kent Shalibo, Carolyn Tuley Darr, Linda Rhoden McKinney, Nancy Poole Klein, Susie Turner Crouch, Linda Rogers Chambers, Carol Cameron Ackerson, Nathan Pearlman and wife, Wendy, Gaynelle Hixson Smith, Nancy Pruett Johnson, Vicki Daniel White, Sandra Belk King, Jon Locke, Della Hallum Dowd, Lew and Ann Tyer Waddey, Barbara and Jerry Potter, and Lloyd Stanley.

Anne began the meeting by handing out the agenda, a list of committee members cell tel #'s and a list of committee members names and responsibilities. She thanked Sharon, Vicki and Tom Wilson for their work on the lovely brochure that was recently sent out. Anne showed us the Memory Book that the class of '58 did and explained that ours will be similar. The Memory Book will include past pics from the annual, current photos that were sent in and candids from the reunion. It will cost $28. There will be a group photo of the class taken on the steps of our CHS on Sat and this will be available to order for $15. The spread sheet directory which will include classmates' names, addresses and e-mail addresses will be given out at the reunion w/o charge. This directory can be updated digitally and when we receive corrections, etc.

Susie reported that the reservations are pouring in and so are the donations!!! Our numbers could reach 150-175, wow! Because of so many wonderful, generous donations, we won't have to scrimp to throw one big, blowout reunion. Lew and Anne T Waddey will make name tags and they will be available as we enter on Fri night.

Susie expressed concern about parking at Heritage Landing on Fri night and Carolyn T Presswood agreed to investigate the possibility of a shuttle bus. Susie had gotten permission from GPS for us to park there and board a shuttle.

Lloyd reported that the banquet on Sat night will be a sit down dinner with a chicken entree and all the trimmings. There will be wine on the tables and a cash bar. The cocktail hr will be 7-8 with dinner at 8:00. Susie reported that she has ordered sheet cakes with an appropriate decoration for our dessert. Nathan and Susie will emcee, and introduce Anne who will introduce the committee members. Brian Moore will DJ the oldies for listening and dancing.

Jon Locke reported that we have 9-10,reservations for the aquarium tour. These can be taken up to 3 days before the event.

Because of concerns of not having enough time allotted for the memorial service, we moved the time of the group photo to 9:15 a.m. on Sat.

Anne told us that Joan Varner Gay has a class banner that we need someone to carry from place to place during the weekend.

Carol C Ackerson is going to make signs, such as a welcome one and directionals to put in strategic spots during the event.

Anne said that there will be several keys to the hospitality room available at the front dest for our use. Della volunteered to help with the hospitality room on Fri and Sat.

Carolyn T Darr said that she will report to Anne about someone to take candid photos.

Nancy P Klein will invite all living faculty (those she can find) to join us either Fri night or Sat night as our guests.

We set the next planning meeting for Thurs, May 7th.

Magic Moments ~ CHS Class of 1959 Fiftieth Reunion

Coming from Sudbury, MA

Richard Morris wrote the following:

Here’s a recent photo of my wife Margriet and me.

We met while I was living in Jakarta, Indonesia to perform the economic evaluation of a port expansion project. After two years in Jakarta, I relocated to El Salvador for a 15-month Central American regional transportation planning project, during which Margriet made two trips from Jakarta to San Salvador before we were married in Chattanooga in 1976. After the project was completed we spent a few months in Los Altos and Mountain View, CA and then moved to Costa Rica for four years, where our two sons were born. After that it was back to California and then a year in Saudi Arabia before finally settling down in Sudbury, MA, west of Boston, where we have lived happily for the past 23 years.

My assignment in Indonesia began at Stanford, where I went for graduate school after four years at UT Knoxville. A summer small business development project in Iquitos, Peru led to a four-year working diversion in Chile and then three more years back at Stanford—my “boat bum years”—trying to balance dissertation writing with ocean racing and rugby, which I began in Chile. I finally finished the dissertation when my advisor’s consulting firm, where I worked part-time, was selected for the project in Jakarta and sent me as the resident consultant.

When we settled in the Boston area in 1986, I was working at the international consulting firm Arthur D. Little. That lasted until 2000 when the firm began its sad descent into bankruptcy and I was able to take over an aviation consulting firm that it had acquired a few years earlier. I’m still running that firm and intend to continue for at least a couple more years. I play every summer in a senior softball league and currently head the church growth commission at our church. Our older son is getting married in October, and the younger one is in the Columbia MBA program in New York.

We're looking forward to a great time at the reunion and appreciate very much the efforts of the reunion committee to put it all together.

Can't wait to talk to him as I was in the College Counseling office at GPS for 30 years! And, I heard from the "Junkman'son - Manny David. Glad you're coming Manny. That's all for today - we're up to 174 folks with two weeks left to go.

Important Announcement regarding Sunday Brunch at the Fairyland Club

Anne has asked me to send out the word that the reservations for Sunday Brunch at the Fairyland Club have been closed. We all hope this doesn't inconvenience or disappoint anyone, but we are already over the required number and the club has agreed to honor those reservations already received.

We are all amazed at the attendance we are getting to all the functions. That is very exciting, of course, but has put a restraint on the numbers the facility can handle in this case.

Thank you for understanding.

Susie's updates

Lois Wygoda Klezmer writes:
"Graduation from CHS took me to Indiana University where I received undergrad and graduate degrees and met and married my husband, Michael. I retired five years ago after 33 years as a college Professor of Early Childhood Education in Miami, and Michael and I moved to the beautiful mountains of Santa Fe, NM. After so many years of South Florida's "perpetual summer", we love living with the four seasons again and, best of all, we are so fortunate that a year after our move, our daughter, Deborah, joined us here. Deborah is a glass artist and the Santa Fe art community is the perfect place for her work.

Update from Susie Turner Crouch

Last week I went to Hilton Head for a few days and came home to a mailbox stuffed full of reservations! Let me tell you some folks who are coming: Heard from some Chattanooga folks, Mike McAfee, Bettye Kamin Bozza, our very own Marti Brown and Nancy Klein. Also heard from Alvin Fox, Linda Beavers Simcox, Richard Morris, Jackie Shields and Jim Schaeffer.
Rita Viness Nash will be unable to attend but sent "loving thoughts to everyone" along with a loving donation. How sweet is that? Thank you, Rita. Don Hamill and Helen Bellamy Gross, hometown folks, were also very generous and we're glad they are coming.

David Ackerson from Knoxville sent a wonderful donation as well as Gerry Bricks from Pennsylvania and Teraca Corn Sutphin from Alabama. Thank you. My good friends from Signal Mountain, Harriette Stewart Hereford, Barbara Dalton Warner and Lew Waddey sent in their reservations with more than generous donations. Yay!

I got the sweetest note from Dottie Jacobs, she is coming but without her husband Don. Dottie says Don had polished up his dancing shoes and was ready to dance again. Don will start radiation again on April 27. Don sends his love and we send it right back. I'll miss my dance with him too. Glad you are coming, Dottie, and thanks for your donation.

And, lastly, Anne Johnson and Sharon Barker (I knew they were coming!) sent in a very nice donation. Those two have worked so hard making this reunion a success and we appreciate them.

Love from North Chattanooga,

Susie Turner Crouch

PS: Today I heard from Gerald Sear and Arch Gregory who are coming and who also sent us a very nice donation. Thank you, guys! See you soon.

Coming from Cumming, GA

Coming from Cumming, GA - Wanda Sullivan Lamb and husband, Ted
I found these pictures of my past birthday, not that I am having them anymore. These are pictures of myself, my BEAUTIFUL grandchildren, myself and my husband, and my son and daughter-in-law. I hope I have not overwhelmed you. I live in Cumming, GA and am a manufacturer's rep of contract furniture. I have been in the furniture industry for over twenty years and am the President and Chief Bottle Washer of my own corporation. My husband, Ted, is in business in Kennesaw, GA as a Chief Operating Officer of Overby- Seawell Company. Ted is a Chattanooga High School grad. He graduated in the class of '65. You may remember his brothers, Roger and Jon Lamb. Roger was in the class of '57, and Jon in '60.

We are planning on attending the reunion. I look forward to seeing everyone.

Eugene A. Steffen: Found!

Thank you Louella (Cherry Spencer) for finding me. I was not aware that I was in a MIA status.

Because my family moved to Chattanooga from the Chicago area (Glen Ellyn) while I was in high school, I didn't have the opportunity to know as many of my classmates as I might otherwise have. However, I am enjoying reading the blog and it will be invaluable in helping me to locate old friends.

I attended UC and graduated from Wake Forest University in 1963, Wake Forest Law School in 1965, and received a LLM from George Washington University in 1988.

I served as a law clerk for a US District Court judge in North Carolina and served 22 years in the US Marine Corps. Military assignments included Quantico and Charlottesville, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Camp Lejeune, NC, Okinawa, and Vietnam with the 1st Marine Division in 1967. Seems like ancient history now.

I have been practicing law in Manassas, Virginia since 1989.

My wife, Tamra, and I have 2 daughters, both of whom live in North Carolina with their families, a son who lives in Virginia and 5 grandchildren. A fairly well-behaved golden retriever graciously permits us to reside in her home in exchange for occasional walks to (and into) Bull Run.

Glenda Orrell Etchison

Dear Carolyn and Anne,

Thanks for the information about the 50 year reunion for the Chattanooga High School Class of 59.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend -- but send best wishes for a successful event.

To update the records, my name on recent mailings is listed as Glenda Orrell Leggitt, I remarried in 1987 to Robert Etchison - so please change the name to Glenda Orrell Etchison. My mailing address is correct, 6409 Eastleigh Court in Springfield, Virginia, and I recently retired from the U. S. Government in January, 2008, having worked for the U.S. House of Representatives, the Federal Trade Commission, Department of Commerce and U. S. Department of Education. I also worked for the President Ford Campaign Committee. As you can see, I have enjoyed my adventures in Washington, D. C. over the last several years.

I hope you both are well and wish you and the members of the Class of '59 all the best!

Sincerely,

Glenda Orrell Etchison

Hello Fellow Grads!!

Like everyone else, I’ve been on a really interesting journey since 1959! And, yes, there have been some ups & downs, but being the late bloomer that I am, I’d have to say the last 25 have been my most authentic & productive years.

Got an associate degree from UC in ’61 & married fellow classmate, Buddy Cox. I worked as a secretary for some years & had a wonderful daughter, too. That marriage ended in ‘76 & the following year I married a man w/business interests in several places– so there was lots of traveling during this phase of my life! We moved to Memphis in 1980 & I’ve been here ever since.

Between travels & all, I managed to complete my bachelor’s degree. And this time, I majored in what really interested me: anthropology & art history! With BA from the U of M in hand, I entered their Egyptian Studies Graduate Program. Completed the 2 yr. course work for the masters but didn’t finish my thesis – life intervened & a divorce followed. I spent some fabulous time in Egypt w/fellow grad students – my most adventurous trip to date!! And, I wasn’t exactly a spring chicken then either!!

I launched my own organization & design business in 1995 &, have loved using my natural talents & training in this way. I’ve even done 2 HGTV shows! I’m active in the Episcopal Church – have been involved w/ renovating several sacristies & a vesting rm., too. I’m still working–-but am selective about what I take on. As long as I have clients I enjoy & can muster the energy, I’m not quite ready to hang it all up yet. My website: www.chaosbusters.com. My daughter is married to a musician & they live in Nashville – a very creative couple -- no grandchildren, but a precious granddog!

Many thanks to all the people who’ve scouted & scoured the web & done the hard work of locating so many of us. The blog is a fantastic idea & has really been fun!!

Susie's worry...

I was beginning to worry...not a single card or letter came yesterday! Today, however, I heard from my good friends Jerry and Linda Estes who are coming to the reunion as well as Jim Wade and thanks to both of you for a very generous donation. Did I mention Pat and Linda Young? Glad they are coming.

Keep those reservations coming - there's plenty of time.

Love from North Chattanooga,

WHAT TO WEAR?

I have gotten several q. about dress for the reunion. We don't have an official "dress code" but here is the general idea.
Fri night barbeque, casual, think "picnic." The club room opens out onto a patio so we will be both inside and out. What we wear that night will depend somewhat on the weather.

Sat night banquet, "party casual" (not cocktail), coat and tie optional.

Sunday brunch, "nice" slacks or casual dress for women; sports jacket for men, no tie required.

Hope that helps!
Carolyn
