Dear Friends & Classmates,

It is with great sadness that we are posting this message: Bud Woodward's grandson Christian died this morning, June 30, around 9:30 EDST. He was four years old.

We appreciate those of you who kept a prayerful vigil through last night; please keep Bud and his family close in your hearts.

'59er vigil: Bud Woodward's grandson in crisis

Bud Woodward with grandson Christian

The doctor has asked all the family to come to the hospital. Pray I have the 3 kids, and will be leaving now
Jim just went to the hospital. They are having some trouble with Christians oxygen levels. The kids are still sleeping. i am here.
Brother, I'm going to a men's prayer breakfast in about an hour...I've prayed for Christian already, and as I gather with my brothers I will share this with them and we will pray some more...I also will add it to our church's weekly prayer bulletin which providentially I publish each Thurs. A.M.
I just received a text from Sarah's husband Jon, there is no change . Please keep praying. That is little Christian I am holding in my lap in my profile picture

It is 1:15 AM, and I just arrived home to make sure Jim is ok with the kids. Stephen, Sarah, Susanna, and Jon are at the hospital. They know all are praying around the world. Susanna says "Please tell everyone not to give up but to keep praying". My phone is about to die so. I domt know how many updates i can give keep prayimg christian is in gods hand the next 12 to 24 hours will tell love u all They do not expect christian to live the next 12 to 24 hours will tell. We r praying for a miracle They do not expect christian to live. Pray for a miracle My daughter just called and said Christian, her 4 year old drowned in the pool, but they have a pulse. I don't know anything more. Will let you know when I hear. Pray please.

Alvin & Lauren Fox: Happy Anniversary June 30

Alvin Fox, his granddaughters, and wife, Lauren

Lauren and Alvin Fox with their granddaughters

Alvin Fox, a Vanderbilt graduate, is now an independent plastics professional.

Alvin Fox on his Air National Guard service:

I served for 25 years in the TN Air National Guard , and I enjoyed every minute of it. I started as an Airman Basic, and retired as a Lt. Colonel. Most of my career was in Logistics and Supply. However, I had 4 years as the Supply Officer for the Marksmanship Training Unit, located in Nashville. We were responsible for promoting Marksmanship for the Army and Air National Guard units throughout the country. This Unit is now located in Little Rock, AR. My service in the Guard was especially important to me, as my parents had fled Europe in the late 1930's, and were able to escape the Holocaust. My grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins were not as fortunate. Except for Kate Smith, no one could sing "God Bless America" with more feeling and gusto as my wonderful Mom, Bertha. My oldest granddaughter is named for her. - from Alvin Fox

A Message from Rick Mitchell

"When I think of Dan, I view him as a driving force behind organizing many of our earlier class get-togethers. They have meant a lot to me over the years, and I feel a debt of gratitude towards Dan & Carolyn both.

Thanks, Dan, for your caring attitude, and the hard work you put in to keep our class together. While we've missed you physically at the last outings, you've been and will continue to be with us in spirit.
God bless

David G. Bailey CHS 1959 - June 28th, 2011 at 8:04pm - Email

As I read all the beautiful comments here, what else could be said about this wonderful man. Just like all before, Danny never met a stranger, he could bring out the best in every person.

We began our friendship @ East Lake Jr.High in 1955, and it carried on from there, all the way through City High. As leaving for the military soon after School, I lost touch with a lot of CHS, but the memories still live on as I see the names of classmates.

As I would see my family from time to time, my niece's husband who also had met Danny, would always tell me "DANNY SAID TO SAY HELLO" when he saw me, that was the Danny I remember. Riding the Bus to school with him onboard is a memory that will live forever.

To Carolyn and the family, I must say it was memories of him I will cherish for ever.

Goodbye my friend. David Bailey Monroe, Ga

My sweet Danny Boy! How I loved you! We had such a fun marriage and so many wonderful memories of the different places we saw together. The best part of our marriage was that I knew how much you loved me and you knew how much I loved you. That is what I hold in my heart and what will keep me strong. I will miss you honey. Forever my love, Carolyn

Danny was the leader of our pack in the Army Reserves, you could count on him for our gang to have our own personal jeep at summer camp. He had it all planned to where we would volunteer on the first day of camp for some detail that would take us about two days to complete. Once we completed that task we were free for the rest of the two weeks to go to movies, go bowling or spend all day at the base pool playing water football. As David Parker said in his post about Danny being in control in ROTC, I'm here to tell you that his control carried over into the real US Army. I think that I can speak for Myself, Franklin Hodge, Kenneth Shipp, Jerry Botsford, and Joel Anderson in saying, thanks to Danny for making times that could have been trying into some of the most fun times in our lives. What a guy, he will be missed. Robert Richey Central High class of 59

One more thought ...

Bob Rose - June 25th, 2011
Dan Anderson was one of the funniest people that I ever met. He crossed my path in 1969 doing Industrial Insulation where I worked. We became instant friends. I later found out that he literally ran into my older brother at his cousin Joel's house-and they exchanged knots to their forehead as they tried to both run in and out of a garage at a high school party. He sponsored many sports teams over the years and I had the priviege to compete against him and his cronies. Once in a Basketball game we were up 30 plus points at the half with a superstar college kid named Herkley who later played Pro ball in Europe. Dan being the ultimate coach sent in one of his bullies to start a fight and the ref through them both out. Needless to say they beat us by one point. Later I learned that it was better to play with him than against him. He quit coming to our games when some of our players got us thrown out of Y league, Salvation Army, and the Jewish Community Center for fighting. He loved his City High School class of '59, and I from Rossville class of 60 would quiz him about all of the things that they would do at his beloved reunions so that we could emulate his master planning for our class reunions. If I had known him earlier , I would have joined the Reserve Unit that conquered many summer time war efforts. He recounted names to me like-Bawanna McDowell, Franklin Hodge, Robert Richey, & Byron Strickland . Danny having had military at City took the lead role of a Sargent Bilko character and would rule the base with an iron hand. Large convoys were nothing for this master planner. Generals would call him for advice. As mentioned in the Obituary , he loved the Vols, the lady Vols, UTC womens basketball and kept up intently with all aspects of those sports. He played in many underhanded Rook Championships through the East Lake Center and at the State level; with some of his friends using codes and colors to beguile their opponents. He knew more about movies than anyone I have ever met. He could quote entire passages from all of the classics. He never met a stranger and was always quick witted with comebacks for any situation. He had a disdain for short people. He mentioned names to me over the years that finally came to light as I attended his funeral and had the opportunity to meet some of them; People like Mickey Barker, Mickey Cobble, Skipper Cox, Dave Parker, Darrel McDonald, Ken Ship, Barney Giles, Don and George Adair, Joel Anderson, Earl Morgan, Ron, Tom , and Johnny Turner, Lawrence Hogue, and on and on and on. He had funny stories about each one and most of those stories were retold on Friday morning during visitation, the funeral service, and at the gravesite. He introduced me to the Cadillac Cowboys-an early Statler brothers record. He broadened our love of music with occasional opera tickets. He sang in our chuch choir for a few years and his voice is still remembered. We shared many meals together as families and one that is still remembered was at his home featuring pintos, cornbread, collard greens, sliced tomatoes, etc. All furnished by his amazing mother -Lola Anderson. What a cook. His children were like my children and we all are in one accord in that we will miss our Danny Boy. A great father, husband, and friend. Warmest Regards-Bob Rose

Jim and I went to Dan's visitation and enjoyed meeting his precious 96 y/o Mother who is still sharp as a tac. Carolyn was very gracious as well as his children and grandchildren. So glad Dan is at peace now and as Carolyn said he is singing with the angels.

The Class of 1959, Chattanooga High School, always will remember our Danny. He worked diligently and faithfully through these many years to keep our class connected. He and Carolyn are greatly loved by all of us..

I remember Danny so well from our days at CHS. He was a friend to all he ever met, and that warm smile was always there. Because I moved away right after graduation, I lost track of most of the classmates, but when I went to the 30th reunion in '89, Danny was there to greet me, and it was just like nothing had changed over the years. This was a fine man, and he will be missed by many.

Danny was my best friend during our three years at Chattanooga High School. He always kept us laughing. We were in "G" Company, Second Platoon, our Sophomore year and Danny would always tell us: "Alright, listen up you guys. This is "Big Dan" speaking and I am running this outfit. You take your orders from me!". Danny and I stayed close to each other for the next 52 years and never concluded a conversation without saying: "I Love You". Danny knew more about members of our class than did anyone else. He was responsible for the beginning of our class reunions. So long my dear friend. I love you. David
