Symphathy to Betsy Bender Groh

Our sympathy is with our classmate, Betsy Bender, in the loss of her mother.

Margaret B. Bender, 94, died on Saturday, January 1, 2011, at her residence at Morning Pointe of Chattanooga, The Lantern, Shallowford Road.

A lifelong resident of Chattanooga, she was a member of St. John United Methodist Church. She was office manager for the ACT Remington Agency of Chattanooga for many years.

She was an active volunteer at Senior Neighbors, served on the boards of AARP, Chapter 22, the Greater Chattanooga Area Democratic Women’s Club, and the National Association of Parliamentarians.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (Bob) L. Bender Sr., formerly Hamilton County Deputy Assessor of Property, her mother, Martha Burnette Sain; father, Judson Otha Burnette; and stepfather, Porter F. Sain, all of Chattanooga.

Margaret is survived by her son, Robert L. Bender Jr. and his wife Karen of Huntsville, Ala., and two daughters, Barbara Bender Howard and her husband, Ed Howard of Chattanooga and Betsy Bender Groh of Lexington, Tn.; six grandchildren, Robert Edward Howard and Teresa Howard Sharp of Chattanooga; Jack Ronald Salling, Columbus, Oh.; Margaret Angeline (Peggy) McCue, Atlanta; Leigh Ann Bender, Huntsville, Ala., and Travis Scott Bender, Birmingham, Ala.; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Porter Jack Sain and sister-in-law, Rozelle Bender, both of Chattanooga, and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staffs at Morning Pointe and Amedisys Hospice Services for their devoted care and assistance.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 4, at the Chattanooga Funeral Home, Valley View Chapel with the Rev. Dallas Beck, officiating. Interment will follow at Lakewood Memorial Gardens East.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 3, at the funeral home.
