CHS Class of ‘59 Second 70th Birthday Party Planning Meeting

Minutes
From the November 18, 2010 meeting

Our second planning meeting was held at Vicki Daniel White’s home and was chaired by Anne Johnson. Also attending were Susie Turner Crouch, Linda Rogers Chambers, Carolyn Tuley Darr, and Barbara Dalton Warner.

Following a review of the minutes of the July 22 meeting, Anne stressed that we are indebted to the generosity of many of our classmates who made donations exceeding the cost of the 50th Reunion. We will be able to enjoy a really nice 70th birthday party and also repay these classmates with another opportunity for fellowship and a fun party. A number of classmates are excited about another chance to visit with friends and indicate that they plan to attend.

Susie is the chairperson for the main event, the birthday celebration scheduled for Saturday, June 4, 2011 at the Bessie Smith Hall; Linda is one of the committee members for this event along with Wanda Sullivan Lamb who is helping with decorations. Starting at 5 pm with drinks (beer and wine included), hors d’oeuvres, and mingling, the evening activities include a dinner catered by the Big Table and a DJ for dancing. For those who prefer other adult beverages, BYOB is fine. Our contract with the venue does include clean up services. All is included for a very nominal charge of $25 per person. We discussed how many we might expect to attend and whether we might have fewer than attended the reunion.

In hopes of attracting a large response, we discussed other “pay as you go” activities including places to get together Friday evening, a daytime event on Saturday, and a brunch on Sunday. Susie has secured a $139 room rate at the Chattanoogan (based on a minimum of 10 rooms) and is working with their staff on a hospitality room near a cash bar for Friday evening. Following this time would be an excellent opportunity for attendees to head out to dinner in any of the restaurants in the area or dine at the Chattanoogan . For Saturday Anne and Carolyn are working on a tour of the 1850 Martin Davis House, a private home in Chickamauga with historical value. This event will include a box lunch, and the house has comfortable porches and areas for relaxing and visiting. Susie is also working on a brunch for Sunday at 11:15 at the Chattanoogan. Details will appear in future mailings for these events.

Obviously volunteers are needed in several areas including name tags for the party Saturday, other volunteers for Saturday, committee/hosts for the Saturday lunch and the Sunday brunch, and invitations and mailings/emails. Charley Wheeler who made the “Save the Date” postcard can do a “survey monkey” to find out who might attend. Vicki has available some of her lovely note cards with famous Chattanooga scenes to be used as invitations with informational handouts enclosed. Louella Cherry Spencer, Trudy Walker Moore, and Pat Donica Crawford have also volunteered.

As those of us present stressed, we want this 70th birthday party to be a really fun time for more visiting among classmates. Our reunion was very successful for many reasons like the hard work of the committee and especially the joy in catching up with friends many of us had not seen in years.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at 5:00 to work on invitations and will be at Vicki’s.

Respectfully submitted,

Barbara D. Warner
