Mary Helen McDaris Mertz is in Murfreesboro

Dear Anne,

I am a member of the Chattanooga High School class of 1959 and I heard about the plans for our Reunion from a friend who attended Central High School. She was gracious enough to e-mail me the web site and I have enjoyed reading the news of CHS this afternoon.

I would like to get my name on the invitation list to attend the Reunion in May. I have lived outside Tennessee for many years, but am now retired and live in Murfreesboro. I would appreciate any information you can share with me about our old friends and classmates, plus news and updates on our Reunion.

Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,
Mary Helen McDaris Mertz

POST HURRICANE CHECK-IN

Dear Friends,

A heartfelt thank you for your thoughts and prayers during Hurricane IKE. We felt your love and concern through the long hours. We are safe and unharmed. We lost our fence and one tree, but our home itself seems o.k. We are awaiting return of electricity to our neighborhood. I have renewed respect for our pioneers. Having purchased a generator and a window A/C unit following Rita three years ago, we feel blessed to have a few comforts. I have missed internet access, but I found it at a local cafe this morning. It is a comfort to know that old friends truly are stars in the sky. Thank you for being there!

Love to all,
Sharon

Rick Mitchell says Hi

Hello Classmates...
I've enjoyed reading the blog, catching up on the lives of many of you, and seeing you at the reunion. Here is my story:

After our graduation, I went to Ga Tech, and got a degree in mechanical engineering; wasn't sure that was what I wanted to do (after 4 years, seems like I could have decided earlier and avoided a lot of pain!!). Anyway, as long as I was at Tech, I decided to a Master's degree (No, not Mech Engr, but Industrial Management.)

I married Angela Glover, a young lady from Florida who went to UC. We've been married 44 years (truly a sainted lady). We have two children -- a son Richard who lives in Nashville with his wife and son (8 years); and a daughter who will marry in December and live in Knoxville with her husband and stepson (5 years).

I joined IBM after Ga Tech and was with them in Atlanta for 30 years as a systems engineer. (Retired in 1996). I was, also, commissioned as an officer in the US Army, and stationed at Ft MacPherson with 3rd Army HQ in Atlanta. Wanting to include me in all aspecpts of service life, they invited me to join them for a full year in VietNam in 1968. I was at Long Binh (long, but interesting year). Much to Angela's chagrin, I decided to remain in the Reserves for 26 more years. Ou unit did get called up for Desert Shield in 1993 (?) but just for a month in Houston. When I retired in ''94, it was truly a "Rolaids" moment for Angela.

In retirement...well we live in Vinings in Atlanta, and there are lots of oak trees. They keep falling so I cut and split them up. We spend a little time at our exercise/social club. Angela teaches aerobic swimming (and she trains as a triathlete --she's won 3 events (in her age group) this year. I'm quite proud of her. We're also quite active in our church...Angle in the women's ministry, Rick in the children's ministry and as a bible study leader.

I stay in touch with John Hayes (he's a Tech graduate -- in fact, Student Body president our senior year) he cheers the Yellow Jackets on with me (whern we have something to cheer about -- maybe this year!!). I see Kent Shalibo when he can make it to Atlanta (less and less often)...and, again I look forward to seeing many of you at the reunion.

CHS: Map it!

In this map you can see that the streets from down town where the hotel is located is one way going away from town. Closest parking now is behind the school where the track was.

To go behind the school enter Siskin Drive, take a right in front of the gym.

Some one else may improve upon this map

Sharon Barker Tunnell is safe after Ike!

After 16 hours of high winds and rain, Sharon and family, including several loved dogs are safe! She is without electricity and doesn't expect it to beturned on until Tuesday this week. She said it was positively scary. Her property has tree damage but no flooding. She sends thanks for our concern and will contact us when she is able.

Creed Bates Speech

"By their fruits ye shall know them."

Ideally, the fairest criterion of evaluating a school would be an evaluation of its alumni, if by some magic means we could determine the relative influence that particular school had on the lives of those alumni.

Through the years the record of Chattanooga High School continues to elicit our admiration.

Numbered among them are scholars, outstanding scientists, responsible public officers, business leaders, and successful men and women in all walks of life.

In this school we strive for intellectual integrity, for civic and patriotic virtue, and for the development of well-adjusted students.

You have been an important and vital part of City for the past three years.

We hope that you have benefited in full measured from your sojourn with us.

We believe in you and have full confidence that you will do well your part for your community and country.

G. Wayne Clough goes digital

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Smithsonian Institution will work to digitize its collections to make science, history and cultural artifacts accessible online and dramatically expand its outreach to schools, the museum complex's new chief said Monday.

The Smithsonian Institution's new chief wants to bring in Web gurus to find creative ways to present artifacts online.

"I worry about museums becoming less relevant to society," said Secretary G. Wayne Clough in his first interviews since taking the Smithsonian's helm in July.

Clough, 66, who was president of the Georgia Institute of Technology for 14 years, says he's working to bring in video gaming experts and Web gurus to collaborate with curators on creative ways to present artifacts online and make them appealing to kids.

"I think we need to take a major step," Clough said in an earlier interview. "Can we work with outside entities to create a place, for example, where we might demonstrate cutting-edge technologies to use to reach out to school systems all over the country? I think we can do that."
Smithsonian officials do not know how long it will take or how much it will cost to digitize the full 137 million-object collection and will do it as money becomes available. A team will prioritize which artifacts are digitized first.

Clough told reporters and editors of The Associated Press that the Smithsonian will need a reorganized, central department that would become an authority on K-12 curriculum development.

The biggest advantage for the museums, including the American history and air and space, is that many of their visitors are younger. Longtime Smithsonian leaders acknowledge, though, that the academic side could do more to relate to youngsters.

"Wayne's coming from a place, Georgia Tech, where he spent a lot of time with 19-year-olds, which is a demographic that the Smithsonian doesn't relate to all that much," said Richard Kurin, the acting under secretary for history, art and culture. "That's where the future is."
It's also a new way for the Smithsonian to generate cash from private educational foundations or the U.S. Department of Education at a time when funding from Congress is flat and could decline, Clough said.

The Georgia native replaced a Smithsonian chief who was criticized for pursuing questionable commercial ventures, including a television deal with Showtime, and spending lavishly on corporate travel and expenses while trying to boost moneymaking operations.

The push to connect with schools comes as some museums across the country are seeing declines in student field trips, said Ford Bell, president of the American Association of Museums.
The federal No Child Left Behind law with its "focus on math and reading, and the high prices of gasoline is a double whammy," Bell said.

Some museums are going out of their way to prove their programs tie in with state education standards, Bell said. Museum leaders also are increasingly focused on digitizing their online collections, despite its expense, he said.

Hello Dynamo 59ers

My, how time flies! I cannot believe that we are old enough to be planning a 50th reunion.....but my driver's license says it is.

Now let's see--little bit about my life. Graduated from UC in ' 62. Married for 46 years to Bob Crosby whom some of you may remember from Brainerd . Got my masters degree from Austin Peay while he was in Vietnam. Have 2 sons....one still single but to be married in ' 09. One 23 year old grandson who lives near us. We have lived in Indianapolis since 1979..so both boys graduated from Indiana University. Stayed here after Bob retired from the Army after 20 years and lots of military moves around the country. Taught school for 5 years total including 2 in New Orleans when the Army sent Bob to Tulane for his MBA. I have been a Realtor here in Indianapolis for 28 years....and yes, I am still working.

Bob and I love to travel, are involved in our church, several service groups, have started spending February in Savannah to escape the Indiana winters. Indy is a great place to live......except in January and February.

We only make trips to Chattanooga when Bob has his Baylor reunions. In fact, he has his 50th the first weekend of October. I may even be there to attend the next "planning" meeting to say hello. I keep in touch with Connie Harmon Temple, Charlotte Meacham Mullis and Judy Lynes Arnold. We left Chattanooga in ' 66.

Thanks to all the great work y'all are doing with the lists of contact information......I have a new friend here in the area. Louella Cherry Spencer and I have met and enjoy each other's company. Only knew each other in passing while in school.

Thank you to so many of you who are working to make our reunion a success. We are looking forward to seeing everyone in May.

God bless everyone,
Margaret Llewellyn Crosby

News from Sharon Barker Tunnell

Carolyn (Presswood),

Thank you so much for your note of concern. We are storm weary already, but we are almost ready for its arrival tomorrow afternoon/evening. We have our supplies; we just need to board up the windows. As we are not in the evacuation zones, we are staying home.

Fortunately , we are 60 miles inland from Galveston. We live in a former pine forest, which causes us concernabout trees. The thoughts and prayers of our friends afar mean so much to us.

Jeanne Mabry's mother

From: "Carolyn Anderson" volfan@fbright.com
To: "Carolyn Presswood" cpresswood@bellsouth.net
Subject: Jeanne Mabry's mother
Date: Thu, 04 Sep 2008

Did anyone know Jeanne’s mother died. Her obit was in last week’s paper. I believe they had services last Sunday. We were going to try and go for visitation but didn’t make it. I wonder if anyone heard from her?

Dan is doing about the same………good days, bad days. Things seem to be slipping a little more each day, he can’t remember how to dial a number anymore and has trouble finding the word he wants to say but we’re hanging in there.

Hope everyone is doing okay.

Retiring Justice Barker swears in successor

Retiring Chief Justice William M. Barker, will administer the oath of office at 2 p.m. at the Supreme Court Building to incoming Chief Justice Janice M. Holder, who was elected by the Court to serve a two-year term. She was appointed to the Supreme Court in December 1996 and was elected in 1998 to a full eight-year term. In 2006, she was reelected to a second eight-year term.

Justice Janice M. Holder, the third woman in the state's history to serve on the Supreme Court of Tennessee, will become the first woman ever to serve as its chief justice when she is sworn into office.

"I am grateful to my colleagues on the court for their votes of confidence and look forward to working with them as we continue our efforts to bolster the public's trust and confidence in the judiciary," Holder said. "I have the highest respect for the court's intellectual integrity, enthusiasm, work ethic, and commitment to the law and public service."
