The Mailman Cometh!

I have really enjoyed reading the notes attached to reunion reservations. Eric Reece writes: "I am really looking forward to seeing friends from the past. Please accept my thanks for working so hard and pass my thanks on to the other organizers....he goes on to say that he met and married his college sweetheart, Jeanne. "We moved to Albuquerque upon my graduation and have lived here ever since. We have two daughters and four granddaughters." I keep up with things on the blog site. I think Anne's idea of getting together with mates from elementary and junior high is super."

Eric very generously included a donation which we very much appreciate. Thank you, Eric.

I also heard from Jim and Fretta Hilton who are looking forward to seeing everyone. He, too, was very kind in his donation. We appreciate and thank you.

Dan Anderson

Dan’s sister, Mitzi, here.

Carolyn and I wanted you to know that Dan is being moved from Martin-Boyd. On Tuesday of last week we had a consult with the staff at Martin Boyd and they told us it was time to move Dan to a facility better equipped to handle someone special like Dan. He is going to the Consulate facility on Standifer Gap Road .

On Saturday, Dan had a seizure and a 911 was called. He has been in Parkridge since Saturday, room 349. Someone is staying with Dan 24 hrs per day because he is at risk for falls.

He has had 2 CT scans, an MRI, and an EEG, along with an EKG, x-rays and all look fine. Unfortunately, it’s the progression of the disease. He’s not been too responsive for the last 24 hrs but we think it could be some meds he is on now that he has never been on.

I asked Carolyn who all she wanted me to get in touch with. I don’t know how to contact Skipper, but she has his number at home.

Please feel free to share this information with any other classmates.

If you want to call me my cell number is 423/605-4025 or email is mitzi@fbright.com.

Thank you so much for the visits to Dan. Sometimes he doesn’t know any of us but as his family we do appreciate his friends who continue to remember and visit with him and recall good times.

With Hostess, Anne Johnson
The Sunday brunch is designed to be a memorable meal to climax a memorable reunion—the Stardust of a brilliant star-filled event. The CHS party will have our own private room, with large windows that render us a view of the Tennessee valley and parts of Georgia. Brunch at the Fairyland Club is an elegant buffet including breakfast-- omelets, sausages, other breakfast meats, waffles and more. Lunch entrees include roast beef, seafood, fish, chicken, and the most gorgeous-tasty vegetable and salad display you’ll find. There will be at least 6 of each to choose from. When Anne eats there with her friend, David, she says he eats both meals at the one sitting! Then, when you think you can’t eat another mouth full, you look over to the dessert buffet where you will see chocolate cake and at least 4 other offerings. The Club has its own pastry and bread chef and Anne says you could make a meal of the breads alone. She also says the coffee and tea are the best. The cost of the buffet is $ 21. The Fairyland Club is a private club and, as such, does not take credit cards. (Special drinks extra)

As Kent Shalibo reminded us:
FRIENDS ARE LIKE STARS IN THE SKY – YOU MAY NOT ALWAYS SEE THEM, BUT THEY ARE ALWAYS THERE.

So, SEND IN YOUR RESERVATION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. WE DO NOT WANT TO MISS YOU.

Thanks to Richard

I received a very nice note from Richard Morris this week thanking the Committee for all the work in organizing our big weekend. He enclosed a more than generous check to support our class. His donation is very much appreciated. We all owe him a big thank you. Love from North Chattanooga, Susie Turner Crouch

To go behind the school, enter Siskin Drive, take a
right in front of the gym.

During the reunion there will be a self tour of
the school at 8:30 with Starbucks coffee in the cafeteria.

At 9:45 a group picture will be taken on the front steps of the school.

At 10:00 there will be a Memorial Service in the auditorium.

Linda Rogers Chambers checked on the elevator.

They have installed a new one right inside the double glass doors in the entrance across from the gym.

You can enter there and ride the elevator to the first floor.
You would walk through the elementary school part of the school.
You'll be at the cafeteria.

This is all level with no stairs.

To get to the auditorium, you would reverse your steps and ride to the next floor and go down the hall to the auditorium.

There is parking near this doorway.

There is also a direct entrance to the cafeteria through the door on the left of the parking area. You have to go down some stairs to get into the cafeteria.

Kenneth Peterson checks in!

From Louella Cherry Spencer: I just had a nice conversation with Kenneth Peterson. He said he went to the 25th reunion but moved to Connecticut for five years after that and now lives in Weddington, NC. However, his address is Matthews, NC as Weddington is a small place. Kenneth retired from Bayer (asprin) Corporation.

He was excited about the reunion and is looking forward to reading the blog and I asked him to do a write-up for the blog after he sees it, and he said he would.

John and Dru (Smith) Fuller

I became involved with IT for the CHS '59er web site/blog site. Anne Johnson recruited me last year. Let's be clear: that site content comes entirely from the reunion planning committee. I am amazed at all the information they send me to post.

Until my retirement in 2003, I was professional staff for three successive Texas attorneys general (hey, only one went to the penitentiary). Earlier, I was with Texas Lt. Gov. Bob Bullock. Earlier still, I was with U.S. Senator Jim Sasser. Now, I'm a journalist in the Capitol Hill Press Corps. I cover the statehouse for five Nashville newspapers. You may view my blog at drusie.blogspot.com.

My husband John also retired as assistant attorney general. He now is a legal consultant, telecommuting from Nashville to Austin. We'll celebrate our 26th anniversary in July with a fancy trip, as we have every year.

Now, please send me YOUR bio and picture so I can post them for everyone.

Louella strikes gold, again!

I thought I was through looking for people. But, I had a few minutes and I started thinking maybe I could find someone else. I noticed we had not found our "Most Studious Boy". I just talked with Michael Bonin and it sounds like he has had a very interesting life. He got his PHD from UT and worked in forensics and health research. I asked him if after he sees the blog if he would write something about himself and he said he would.

Eric Reece

Eric Reece will be coming from his home in New Mexico and will be looking for friends at the reunion!

After graduating from City, I attended Georgia Tech. While at Tech, I met and married the love of my life, Jeanne. I took a job at Sandia National Laboratories, and we moved west to Albuquerque. What I thought was going to be a short term job (they sent me to grad school) ended up lasting forty incredibly interesting years. I had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of things: electronic sensors for Vietnam; seabed sensors supporting oil exploration;
concepts for the exploration of the Martian surface; and for the last fifteen years, managing Sandia's missle defense programs. One of the best things about my last job was the opportunity to visit Huntsville, AL where I was able to hook up with Ron Davis, one of our classmates and the best man at my wedding.

Jeanne and I have two wonderful daughters, Cindy and Sandy. They each have two daughters- I have male dogs. I retired from Sandia in December, 2004. I spend my time caring for Jeanne (some health issues right now), looking in on my ninety-three year old mother, playing with the two granddaughters who live in Albuquerque, and trying to break 90 on the golf course.

Shutter Bug Has His Sights on You!

The camera is on you and your junior high classmates! Be there for a photo op at the
CHS 59er Saturday evening reunion event. Your junior high group will be included in the reunion memory book.

Catching up: Margaret Sims Trainer

I graduated from Tennessee Tech with a degree in education and taught in the Hamilton County School system for 5 years, during which time I met and married Fred Trainer and we started a family.

Ann Margaret was born in '68 and Frederick, Jr. in '70. Both are married. Ann's family lives in Savannah, GA, and Fred, Jr. lives here in Knoxville. We have 3 grandchildren and hoping for 4.

We moved to Knoxville, TN in '72, so after 37 years, we've settled in and can't imagine living any other place. It took a few years getting use to these Big Orange crazies, since our family are all Georgia Tech fans.

Both Fred, Sr. and Fred, Jr. have undergraduate degrees from Tech, but Ann and Fred, Jr.(masters in business) have degrees from UT, as well, so we're covered! After moving to Knoxville, even I attended UT a few times to keep my teaching credentials updated.

When our children were 12 and 14, I went to work for Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church, a very large church, where we're now members. I retired after 18 years. My responsibilities varied through the years from receptionist, to secretary of the senior pastor, and the last 6 years I was the office manager.

Fred and I are very active in church. My area of responsibility rests mainly in teaching children's Sunday School, grades 4, 5 and 6, for about 30 years. My teaching degree has NOT been wasted! We do a variety of volunteer jobs, mainly through the church, which provides ample opportunities for ministry.

Fred and I enjoy entertaining and frequently have small groups in for dinner. I love to read mysteries and historical fiction - nothing too heavy. Since retiring in 2000, I've taken up scrapbooking, concentrating on grandchildren and trips we've taken.

In the past few years I've developed a love for flower arranging (nothing too fancy), which comes in handy when entertaining.I'm looking forward to seeing everyone in May.

Jeanne Mabry Moore from lthe Coast

Would love to see more pictures and find out what members are doing after all these years.

As for me, we are loving retirement here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. About 8 years ago, Jimmy and I moved here to fish and to play poker. Hurricane Katrina changed things for a few years, but we were some of the more fortunate ones...we at least still had a home after she came through in August 2005. Things are beginning to show improvement with even more casinos, beach front homes being rebuilt, motels and restaurants coming back to the beach, and now our main beach highway is completely finished. It looks beautiful once again.

Hope everything goes well, and please keep me updated.

Jeanne Mabry Moore

What was your junior high?

I encourage junior high groups to look each other up and plan to meet at the CHS reunion, this May. There will be pictures taken of each junior high group at the banquet, Sat. evening at the banquet.

Picture/Memory Book

Here’s the chance to purchase a picture/memory book so that you can recall our 50th reunion long after the event is over. Tucker Photography people will be present to receive payments for the picture/memory books at a registration table during the banquet at the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club on Saturday night, May 16, 2009.

The memory book will contain the group picture taken at the school at 9:45 am on Saturday morning (following the tour of the school but before the memorial service), color portraits and names of those who have their pictures made, and candid shots of the entire weekend.

Individual portraits will be made the evening of the banquet. Tucker Photography will send proofs for you to select the one you want included in the book. At that time you may order individual pictures. Anne Johnson has seen the work done by Tucker Photography, and she says they are very professional and take beautiful shots.

The picture memory book will cost $28.00
The separate 8X10 group picture will cost $15.

Louella Cherry Spencer, P.I.

Some things I learned from talking with “newly found” classmates by Louella Cherry Spencer:

Janet McBirney Childs – I went to Normal Park, Northside, and CHS with Janet so it was so fun to find her and chat. She is excited about the reunion and has kept in touch with Carol Cameron Ackerson. Janet has 5 grandchildren.

Pat Donica Crawford Pat lives in Missouri near Branson and works at Silver Dollar City theme park. She has two daughters. Pat is quite a seamstress and has made a class flag for the reunion.

Neill Brown Sargent has been in GA for about 40 years and has two daughters and three grandchildren. She does not know if she will be able to come to the reunion as her husband has been ill, but she is interested in information about it.

Iris Kaplowitz Tashbar Iris now lives in Waynesboro, PA. She and I did not talk long because her dog or dogs were barking but she wanted reunion information.

Carolyn Gash Shumate Carolyn lives in Marietta, GA. She has two daughters and was interested in reunion information and wants to attend.

Martha Hassler Hammond – lives near the Belmont Mansion in Nashville. She has had some health problems but hopes to hear about the reunion on the blog.

Mary Alice Gilbert Lamb “Sug” – lives in Nashville. Sug has plans to attend her husband’s reunion the same weekend as ours but has decided to try to attend ours on Friday and then go to his on Saturday. She was a social worker for years.

Linda Beavers Simcox – Moved to SC about 5 years ago. She has 3 children and 5 grandchildren. She said Dan Anderson used to always call her about reunions. She hopes to attend.

Carolyn Clayton Davidson – lives in Hixson but had not heard of a reunion in the past. Her annual was lost in a flood some years back. She seemed interested in attending.

Audra Dyer – moved from PA to Myrtle Beach, SC. She has kept in touch with Charlotte Colburn Tinnon as they have known each other since they were 12 years old. Audra has had some health problems but would love to attend the reunion.

Mary Shacklett – has changed her name to Jesse Jordan, as she feels it suits her better. She says she has had an interesting life - lived on an island in the South Pacific for 5 years, then in Hawaii for 10 years, before settling down here in Portland, Oregon. She is happy on her little farm in the city which she shares with 2 dogs, 2 cats and 10 chickens. After working for 26 years at a Juvenile Rights Project, she retired 5 months ago.

Reservation update

I got a reservation today from Ken Whitfield - glad he and his wife are coming. Also, one from Lynda Wright. Phyllis Frank and her husband are coming and sent a very nice donation. Joan Gay sent a very generous donation which is so appreciated and she is bringing several scrapbooks and memorabilia to put in the hospitality room. So be sure and stop by to see all her "stuff".

Love from North Chattanooga,
Susie Turner Crouch
