Hi folks,
I have just returned from Rome, Italy where I spent 8 days - After visiting the Vatican, Saint Peter's Bascilica and seeing the Cistine Chapel I realized I had just witnessed something truly spectacular that I'll probably never experience again in my lifetime.
And, upon returning home I received a very generous donation from Rick Mitchell and Gaynell Hixson. Thanks to you both.
Love from North Chattanooga,
Susie Turner Crouch

Gerry Bricks' update
Anne (Johnson),
I do have a 'mug shot' somewhere, that I used for an op-ed piece in the Knoxville paper last year. Let me see if I can find it.
Wayne and I were actually good friends in Jr. Hi. We even double-dated a couple of times, because he was just enough older than I that he had his license a few months before I. Somewhere around the time of the 40th I did have some e-mail exchanges with him and sent him a copy of the composite class picture from our Brainerd graduation, but nothing recently.
I was able to get onto the blog!

Gerry (Bricks),
Thanks for your update! I will send it to the blog. Do you have a recent digital photo or a web page where we could get a picture?
What a wonderful career. Again, I'm proud of you and our school. Did you attend classes with Wayne Clough, now the head of the Smithsonian? So many of CHS grads were able to move into the sciences. Something was right about the school as well as the students.
If you have memories of either your teachers or fellow students, I would be happy to get them posted on the blog too.
Please send a picture ASAP, to Dru Fuller, our webmaster, If not she'll just post your message.
Also please confirm that you were able to get on the blog. It's so much fun!
Thanks,
Anne (Johnson)

Thank you both so much for such a warm and gracious 'welcome back.'
I actually went from one CHS 59 to another CHS 59 (Clawson High School, Clawson, MI). So I've got two such 'memory lanes', which is fascinating in and of itself.
After graduation, I came back to TN for undergraduate school at what was then Memphis State U, now U of M. I got my BS there with a double major in math and physics. I also met my wife there, and we got married right after I graduated.
I then went to graduate school at Johns Hopkins, where I got my Masters and PhD in physics.
Virtually all my work has been in military-related advanced technology development. First with GE, then a small company in northern VA. In 1995 I started my own company. We provide technical support (the private sector would call it consulting) exclusively to DoD Program Managers in the DoD Chem/Bio Defense Program. In our case that specifically means we work on sensor programs to provide systems that give advance warning of an attack by bio warfare materials.
We have two sons, one is an IT person for a large international company. The other is career military, and currently is in his fourth tour of duty in Iraq. This one has a daughter, and a son who was supposed to make his appearance last Thursday, but we are still awaiting!
That's why I am currently working out of my place in east TN.
In my 'spare' time I try to play golf occasionally, and am actively involved in efforts to raise awareness and mitigate global warming/climate change.
I will indeed try to stay in touch.
Thanks again,
Best to all,
Gerry

Anne (Johnson),
I've been receiving info on CHS 59 over time from Mickey Cobble. He has suggested that I establish contact with you directly, but to this point in time I've been slow in following up on his direction.
Background:
I was a member of CHS 59, but did not graduate with it. I was in Chattanooga area schools, grades 1-11: grade 1 in Rossville, then Missionary Ridge, Anna B. Lacey, Brainerd JHS, and CHS.
But in the late winter/early spring of '58 my father was transferred from Chattanooga to Detroit. The family stayed in CHA thru the end of that school year, but in the summer of '58 we moved to a suburb of DTW, where I graduated in '59.
I did return to CHA for the class graduation ceremony in '59.
However, with the exception of driving thru CHA on my way to graduate school in late summer of '63, that was my last time in CHA until the late '90s.
Sometime in the late '90s Mickey and I reestablished contact, and I got back to CHA to visit with him. He even talked me into attending the '99 reunion.
Now we actually do spend significant time in TN (I am driving there tomorrow), because I've got a retirement place in Townsend. And one of our sons is in the military, stationed at Ft. Campbell, and he and his family live in Clarksville.
Best,
Gerry

Linda Rogers Chambers' Q&A on CSAS Photos

Window air conditioners instead of central air in this day and age? That broken water fountain? What do they do with all our property tax payments?

What does CSAS stand for?

Answers from Linda Rogers Chambers:
(1)Dru Smith Fuller, I agree with the high property taxes not being used in all cases where they should be. I'm not sure though that it would be a workable situation to install central systems in a building this old because of the difficulty that would be encountered in the space for the duct system and the electrical. I would hope that the water fountain was taken apart and in the process of being repaired although I saw no actual signs of it being done.
(2) To answer Louella Cherry Spencer, CSAS stands for Chattanooga School for Arts and Sciences. This is supposed to be a model magnet school for grades K-12. Parents actually camp outside the school for days in order to get their kindergarten children enrolled.

Subj: Happy Birthday!!
Hi David (Parker),
You were at the reunion meeting at Vicki's but we never talked. I hope you make the next one and we get a chance to visit. I presume you are still practicing law in Nashville. What a great city to live in.
I saw Paul Robere's e-mail to you and didn't realize he was soooo much older than us. Anyway, congratulations on reaching another milestone, though, if you're like me, I don't like the attention at this stage in my life.
Hope to see you soon!

Yes, I was born in Chattanooga. My parents were living at 2102 Bailey Avenue at the time.
I was born in Erlanger Hospital.
My Mother was born in Chattanooga on March 23, 1912 at home on East Fith Street. Her sister was born there in 1905. My grandfather worked in the office at the Norfolk & Western Railway. My great Uncle Howard Tittle owned W.H. Tittle Auto Company on Pine Street for many years. He was the DeSoto-Plymouth dealer. My Mother told me that he owned the first Pierce Arrow in Chattanooga.
How does it feel to be 67?

So looking forward to seeing you again! I love the Fairyland Club! What a beautiful place, and you live near, don't you? Enjoy your family....just finished making homemade rolls, my Mom's recipe, the kids expect them every holiday, and they are delish!
Tell Dru (Smith Fuller) that we were in the 1st grade together downtown. Her Mom was a columnist for the paper, so I am sure she arranged for our photo to be in the paper. My Mom saved it,and I found it in her things after she passed away.

Happy Birthday from Thailand
David Young Parker...
Damn, you're getting old!! ;-)
Today it's the 21st in Bangkok, so I'm probably the first to wish you happy birthday on "the day". Actually, tomorrow is my birthday (22 March), but I'll be 68....you younger guys always had all the fun.
I would imagine that my birthday will be a little different than yours. We'll have a blessing by nine monks tomorrow morning (it's a Thai thing), and then in the afternoon, we're feeding the residents of a local poor area... Being in Thailand does make things a little different.
So, Happy Birthday from Thailand..and many more returns...

Dian Warren Hodge: "day time slumber party"
Hey CHS women and spouses!
I was so impressed with Dian (Warren Hodge)'s experience and expertise I asked her if she would agree to lead a reunion event for women only. She said "Yes!"
The time planned for the "day time slumber party" is Friday, May 15 from about 3-5. We'll get a head start on the party by meeting for "Wine, Women and WOW!" Dian plans a style show, make up demonstrations, door prizes, and a fun afternoon!
Please let her know if you'd be interested in coming so we will get an appropriate space for the gathering. I look forward to finding out some simple beauty routines for our age and stage of life. Most of all I think it will be fun. I hope you do too.

Tomorrow (March 21) is David Parker's 67th B'Day. Maybe you can let the gang know, so he'll receive some happy birthday wishes.

Thanks, Anne (Johnson).
I am grateful for the support of my classmates.
Can you send me the address of the website?

Wayne (Clough),
You are a star of our CHS website and blog! Do check it out.
We are so thrilled and proud of you and our school. I love the idea that a public high school has produced many outstanding persons and or hasn't held us back.
We look forward to seeing you at the reunion and maybe before since we are having planning parties about every six months now.
Congratulations to our "home town boy!"

Hoosiers lunch
Today I had lunch with Margaret Llewelleyn Crosby. We have both lived in the Indianapolis area for over 20 years. Lloyd (Stanley) recently suggested that I call her. Thanks, Lloyd. It was so much fun to see and talk with her.

I could not find the clock! I am sending pictures of the wooden lockers which have been refinished and some have plaques with names on them (memorials and donations). All of the original old wooden doors are still there. When Erlanger Nursing School used the building, they painted the lockers and then Riverside High did who knows what to them. They look nice now though. The metal lockers are all still there also.
I took a picture of the plaque in the front foyer with the info about the original building and a picture of Colonel Bates.
The auditorium seems to have the same seats and some of them are still broken. They have made an outer lobby area that looks really nice. The school still smells the same. The old bookstore is still in place with the window. I suppose they still use it the same way although it was not open. I had forgotten all about it.
They have some really neat things going on now that we missed out on. They are still doing the musicals on the stage and have one coming up in April. I sent a picture of a window where they actually do math problems on the glass. This was in the middle school. The canopy over the walk to the gym is gone and picnic tables are along the way. The cafeteria brought back memories of each club having their own tables and groups. I also remembered eating potato chips, potato salad and milk every day at lunch. "Very nutritious." This saved time because it could be bought in the back of the cafeteria without going through the long line.
The bottom floor is the lower school of K-5, the second floor or entrance is the middle school floor and the third floor is grades 9-12. The fourth floor has been condemned. The old library is still there but there is another one for the lower grades. I believe it is where the home economics classes were.
The gym still looks basically the same except the bleachers have been replaced with the folding plastic ones. I believe they were wooden when we were there. The gym was quite new when we were there since it was built in 1955.
I sent a picture of the molded stairs they went to the cafeteria. I had forgotten about them. I also remembered the one-way stairs. It is interesting that the football field was built the year I was born and most of our class.
Sorry this took so long but I waited until Spring Break so that I could have access without so many students being in the hallways. I have the disc ready to mail tomorrow. Hopefully, you will get it by Friday. Let me know what you think. Apparently I sent this from Richard's e-mail address and I don't check it very often. Please use linda_chambers@comcast.net.
Yes, I did get the info about Wayne Clough. I was impressed that he had been President at Georgia Tech but this is even more so. I'm not sure I remember him though. I did look him up in the annual and he seemed a little familiar.

Linda (Rogers Chambers),
I am so happy to hear from you. I've been wondering what was going on with you. Did you hear that a classmate of our Wayne Clough has been named to be the head of the Smithsonian?
I have a history of the school and the center part was built in 1922 and named Wyatt Hall. The two wings were added in 1935. The football field was completed in 1941 and the gym in 1955. So. . the building is old but lives in our memories. Do they still have lockers?
This will be very interesting to see. Did you have any special memories as you walked around? Is the clock still there?
I am copying Dru Fuller so she's be expecting something from us soon.
Thanks, Anne

I have a CD of some pictures I took at the school. I am going to mail it to you because there are a lot of pictures that you can choose from (or not). You will also have a hard copy at hand if you need it. I know there is a list of addresses somewhere but I can't find it. Please send me your's so I can get this in the mail.
The school is pretty dark and older than I remembered (ha). They are doing a lot of work in anticipation of a critique from a magnet school committee next month so the auditorium wasn't in good shape and is darker than any.
The football field is now a soccer field and some of the classrooms are for tiny kindergarteners.
It was very interesting. I guess the least change was in the cafeteria but there is a television and lots of vending machines. There are even vending machines in the high school area of the school.
This was fun and I got lots of exercise.

Nancy Poole Klein reports:
"I just received a telephone call from Mickie Wade Maddux. She was wanting to know about whether or not we were planning a reunion. Mickie said they have been in real estate for years in the Atlanta area but that she is now an artist involved in the fine arts activities in Roswell. She said that she just woke up one day and realized that she could paint. She is anxious to get in touch with Vicki and talk with her about art. She and Bob have two adult children--a son who is in San Francisco and is planning to be married in the fall, and a daughter who lives in the greater Atlanta area. She has a 10 year-old grandson (Jacob) who is the "apple of their eye." Us grandparents can't identify with that can we?
Several of us have asked about her mother. She said that her mother had been in a nursing home in Atlanta for about three years and that she passed away on December 4, 2007. She had made her home with Mickie and Bob for about ten years prior to entering the nursing home."

Bobbi Gross' update
Hi Dru,
I was out of touch for years, so I'm really enjoying the web site and blog.
I would like to update my address. I've returned to the sunny south, and am at 200 Glens Loop, Woodstock, Ga 30188. (770-516-4119) The email add. is correct.
Does anyone have any information on Sue Putnam Polhemus? I wrote to the address on the list, but my letter was returned.
