Tribute to Buddy Cox

Often when one is reared as an only child, he goes through life longing for a brother or a sister. Then maybe, if he's lucky, he'll find another 'only child' with the same search.

I met Buddy Cox in the seventh grade at Hardy Jr. High and we bonded as the brothers, neither of us ever had. We remained close throughout the three years at City.

After high school our paths parted into different directions.

When he died, all too soon, I was hundreds of miles away and I've regretted I wasn't near him when he needed me the most.

I remember thousands of good times we shared at City in the choir, swing band, Stunt Night, musical shows with the Dynatones, Marty, Brian, Bob, Buddy, and me. The only tone that's silent is his.

We shared the stage in "The Pajama Game" as we shared life off-stage. He was fun, talented, scholarly, warm, loving, and kind. He was my friend, my Buddy. I stop and smile whenever I think of him. ---Ritch Christopher (then, Butch Snyder)

Dru,

Thanks so much for sending me access to the mailing list. I have a question. I noticed that a lot of the alums had addresses with no email address and one name I saw that was missing was Bob Rodric.

He's my cousin and was in our class and I haven't heard from him or have heard of his whereabouts since graduation. He's not on the deceased list...it's as though he disappeared from the globe. Have you heard anything from or about him?

Also, as long as I'm writing...on the 59ers site, I've tried half a dozen times to post a memoriam for my best friend, Buddy Cox and everytime I write the tribute and try to post it, I get a message, 'you are not allowed to post on this page'. So any idea what I can do?

From chs59rs@yahoo.com

Sorry, Ritch. I'll check out the memoriam page problem. Anyone should have access on the memoriam page. Meantime, send me your memory of Buddy Cox by e-mail and I'll post it right away: chs59rs@yahoo.com

We only blocked access to the Blog not the web site. Richard Morriss and Lloyd Stanley (a CEO and an attorney so they know) advised us open access to a page with e-mail addresses might invite spammers.

I don't know anything about the missing e-mails or person. I do think it means those people either did not send us their e-mail addresses or they don't have e-mail addresses.

People not listed probably haven't been found. Maybe you could track Bob Bodric's last known address so we'll know where to look.

Ritch, you are the best correspondent to CHS59ers. We all appreciate you.

HIGH SCHOOL REUNIONS

HIGH SCHOOL REUNIONS

Every five years,
As summertime nears,
An announcement arrives in the mail,
"A reunion is planned;
It'll be really grand;
Make plans to attend without fail."

I'll never forget
The first time we met;
We tried so hard to impress.
We drove fancy cars,
Smoked big cigars,
And wore our most elegant dress.

It was quite an affair;
The whole class was there.
It was held at a fancy hotel.
We wined and we dined
And we acted refined,
And everyone thought it was swell.

The men all conversed
About who had been first
To achieve great fortune and fame.
Meanwhile, their spouses
Described their fine houses
And how beautiful their children became.

The homecoming queen,
Who once had been lean,
Now weighed in at one-ninety-six.
The jocks who were there
Had all lost their hair,
And the cheerleaders could no more do kicks.

No one had heard
About the class nerd
Who'd guided a spacecraft to the moon;
Or poor little Jane,
Who had always been plain;
She married a shipping tycoon.

The boy we'd decreed
"Most apt to succeed"
Was serving ten years in the pen,
While the one voted "least"
Now was a pries ---
Shows you can be wrong now and then.

They awarded a prize
To one of the guys
Who seemed to have aged the least.
Another was given
To the grad who had driven
The farthest to attend the feast.

They took a class picture,
A curious mixture
Of beehives, crew cuts and wide ties.
Tall, short or skinny,
The style was the mini;
You never saw so many thighs.

At our next get-together,
No one cared whether
They impressed their classmates or not.
The mood was informal,
A whole lot more normal;
By this time we'd all gone to pot.

It was held out-of-doors,
Upon the lake shores;
We ate hamburgers, coleslaw and beans.
Then most of us laid
Around in the shade,
In our comfortable T-shirts and jeans.

By the fortieth year,
'T was abundantly clear,
We were definitely over the hill.
Those who weren't dead
Had to crawl out of bed,
And be home in time for their pill.

And now I can't wait;
They have just set the date;
Our fiftieth is coming, I'm told.
It should be a ball,
They've rented a hall
At the Shady Rest Home for the old.

Repairs have been made
On my hearing aid;
My pacemaker's been turned up on high.
My wheelchair is oiled,
My teeth have been boiled;
And I've bought a new wig and glass eye.

I'm feeling quite hearty,
I'm ready to party;
I'll dance 'til the dawn's early light.
It'll be lots of fun;
I just hope there's one
Other person who gets there that night!

Sharon, Carolyn..

I received your letter regarding attendance next year. This is to confirm that I will be coming (of course) and I may be bringing my wife....although she normally thinks that all Americans are slightly crazy (especially after watching some of the political debates)

Hope all goes well there in the US. We're doing OK here in Thailand. We've just returned to a democratic system after a year of military rule...but you wouldn't know it by walking in the shopping malls.

Let me know if there is anything that I can help with..

Date:Thu, 10 Jan 2008

I went to Highland Park Elementary. Since we lived on McCallie Ave, it was an easy walk to Dickinson, City High and then Univ. Of Chatta, where I went two years full time.

After getting married in 1961, we moved to Georgia & have been there ever since. For the past 15 years or so, we have lived just outside Ft. Ogelthorpe even though we have a Ringgold mailing address.

I have been retired for three years after a career primarily in manufacturing accounting & mgmt.

We have two children and two wonderful grandchildren (girls 10 & 12), who live about five minutes away.

Time surely goes by quickly.

Good to hear from you.--Zane

Jon Locke: Poem for 50th

FW: CHS'59 reunion. Poetry Party!
Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2008 14:08:33

I have the honor of being assigned to write a poem for our 50th anniversary. I have been thinking about what I should say. 50 years is a long time. My mind cannot grasp it all. Besides, I have no idea how most of you have spent it.

So tonight I thought of having YOU help me write the poem. I remember once having poetry parties at my home. Several of us would sit around a table and think of a topic. then each of us would write a line or two without seeing anyone else's. Then we would go around the table and read our new poem. It was interesting and fun. (And sometimes enlightening!)

So why don't you take your time and send me a few lines about your most fun or significant time during the last 48 years. It doesn't have to rhyme. Or even make sense. Leave the rest to me.

And if you don't mind, include a few lines letting me know how you have been doing lately. Seeing all the familiar names on the list of 1959 graduates really makes me wonder.

In love and gratitude, I remain,

Yours sincerely,
Jon Locke jon1111@comcast.net

Many on the reunion committee have asked, "How is Dan Anderson?" so I e-mailed Carolyn (Anderson) and this is what she said:

"I'm so sorry I've been BAD about not keeping everyone up but I've been so busy trying to find a home for my Mother. My brother and I finally placed her at the Life Care Center in Red Bank in November.

Anyhow, Dan is doing okay. He had cataract surgery on his right eye two days after Christmas and is seeing better than the doctors thought he would. He is SO proud of himself. He still won't be able to read books, etc. but he's so proud to be able to see much better than he did. Dan continues to have good days and bad which I guess is normal for those with Dementia.

I still have a sitter for him while I'm at work but he's always anxious for me to get home and be with him. I guess this is just one of those diseases where you appreciate the good times! I'm hoping maybe he'll feel like coming to the next reunion committee meeting in February. We'll see.

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and that 2008 will be a wonderful new year for all. Carolyn Anderson.

Good a.m. everyone I know that our 50th reunion weekend is going to be great just getting to see everyone, but I thought I would try to "line" up the "entertainment" for the weekend. Suzie and I are going to co-MC the weekend, and we are aware that a number of you have mentioned the possibility of having a part of the entertainment or some other part.

It will be very helpful if anyone wanting to do, say, act, or anything "else" to let the committee know what you will want to do and approximately how much time you so desire, also if any one of you might need a "pole" for a "prop".

Our next meeting is on 2/9/08, so if you can email me your "thoughts", I will present them to the committee for scheduling. If any of you know of anyone wanting to "entertain" us over the weekend, please ask them to email either myself or Suzie[she's much, much smarter than I and without a doubt, a hellava lot better on the eyes].

What a great weekend we are going to have.

First of all, I need to have a spelling correction on my maiden name. Judith(Judy) Schild Steinmann (My name, Schild, is misspelled on the address sticker from Sharon. Would you check to see that it is spelled correctly on all the lists. I do remember that we had another person with a similar name, and I believe it was spelled Shield, but mine is Schild. Now for the information. James Steinmann and Judith (Judy) Schild Steinmann are coming. Two in our party AND, even though you have our e-mail address, this will probably make it easier for you. It is: jstein8315@aol.com

We appreciate the hard work of the committee. Thank you very much.

I have not heard from Dan Anderson lately and noticed he was not listed on one of the committees. He was always so active in the class reunions. Maybe you can give me an update on Dan (I hope he is well).

Also, I noticed on the web site there were e-mail addresses for many classmates, but next time I went to the site I could not locate them.

I enjoyed the video by my old buddy, Alvin Fox, but it too is not to be found. Maybe I am not looking in the right place. Anne, its great to see you still in the middle of all activities as you always have been.

Thanks for your efforts.

Hey - it's great to hear from you.Yes, those are good memories. I remember us having "parties" at the Park on Cameron Hill.

I live at 618 Godsey Lane, between Red Bank and Falling-Water right at the foot of Signal Mountain.Next question - I'm not sure I've grown up yet!

Married Richard Chambers - two sons, four grandsons (triplets 7 years old and big brother 10 years old today. Where has the time gone?

We have had a little manufacturing business in Soddy-Daisy and are slowly trying to get away from this but have rental property that has kept me busy along with raising the boys and helping with the grandchildren. Having triplets is not an easy job but they have been a lot of fun.

I don't see many of our classmates but did run into Kent Smith at grandparent's day recently and see Barbara Dalton Warner occasionally.

I don't know where any of the old junior high people are right now.

Hi Anne (Johnson),

To use your term I was "blown away" by your email! Now it is your turn to be further "blown away".

Not only have we both spent our careers in higher education, we have been in the same field! I was Professor of Early Childhood Education (now Professor Emeritus) and the Coordinator of the ECE Program at Miami Dade College (which was Miami Dade Community College until a number of years ago when it became a 4 year institution in several fields including Education.)

If Michael and I had stayed in Miami after my retirement, I would probably be doing the same part-time teaching you are doing now.

We were probably in attendance at many NAEYC conferences together but did not know of our common connection.

Hopefully I will be able to be in Chattanooga for the reunion and we will have much to talk about!
