Happy New Year!
Lloyd Stanley has made this reunion committee very happy - not only does Lloyd contribute his time for committee meetings, makes his home available for reunion parties, he has now so generously contributed to our reunion fund! I want to say a personal thank you to Lloyd and speaking for the "working committee" a 'huge' thank you for the 'huge' donation.
Love from North Chattanooga,

Jon Locke's Christmas card
To fill you in on my latest...
I am still employed at the Tennessee Aquarium.
I am attaching a picture of my work crew around the Christmas Tree.
November was my fourth year. I love my job. First it is a great environment. Then I enjoy my fellow workers and supervisors.
I am getting ready for Christmas. I always like this time of the year. I wrote some cards Saturday night and wrapped some presents.
My daughter lives in Chicago where she is a designer. She is coming home for the Holidays. My son lives here. He is always a delight to be around.
Right now I am cooking a cherry pie. I have many things to be thankful for. A cupboard full of food. A car full of gas. My health and good friends.
Happy Holidays,
Jon

Lawyers urged to help the poor
retired Chief Justice William Barker.
(Barker is a 1959 CHS graduate)
December 6, 2008
"Equal justice under the law, if it means anything, it meant that we, as lawyers, ought to step up to the plate. Even if you're a corporate lawyer and have never set foot in a courtroom, we can find something for you to do."---retired Chief Justice Barker
Chief justice says too many forced to tackle legal troubles on their own by Jennifer Brooks, The Tennessean
The Tennessee Supreme Court is calling on every attorney in the state to step up and help out in the face of a mounting crisis in the legal aid system.
More and more low-income Tennesseans are running into deep legal troubles — unemployment, bankruptcy, eviction, foreclosure, unpaid bills and predatory lending practices. And most of them are forced to navigate the courts alone and undefended because they cannot afford an attorney.
The worse the economy gets, the worse their legal problems become."It is no exaggeration to say that low-income Tennesseans have little hope of legal assistance when they encounter civil legal problems. Only one in five income-eligible people will receive the legal help they need," said state Supreme Court Chief Justice Janice Holder, sounding the alarm at a Friday news conference.
The Supreme Court has jurisdiction over the practice of law in this state, and this new initiative comes at the urging of the Tennessee Bar Association, Legal Services and a raft of other legal groups to call for more access to civil legal aid for those Tennesseans who need it most.
"Equal justice under the law, if it means anything, it meant that we, as lawyers, ought to step up to the plate," said retired Chief Justice William Barker. "Even if you're a corporate lawyer and have never set foot in a courtroom, we can find something for you to do."
As an American, you have a right to a court-appointed attorney if you cannot afford one — but only in criminal cases. There is no such right in civil cases, although legal aid groups do work to provide counsel to some of those who need it.
More than 1 million Tennesseans live in poverty who are eligible for civil legal aid, but there are just 75 legal aid attorneys in the entire state, one for every 13,000 people. Private nonprofits, student volunteers from local law schools and attorneys who volunteer pro bono attempt to fill in the gaps, but can barely put a dent in the caseload.
With the state facing a budget deficit of as much as $800 million, it's unlikely the government can step in to solve the problem.
Instead, the access-to-justice coalition will spend the next several months soliciting suggestions from the legal community and the public.

Marsha Moore Cunningham checks in!
Message from Aug. 30, 2008
Hi everyone,
I received the most wonderful note from Marsha Moore Cunningham expressing her appreciation to the "working" committee and she also included a very, very generous contribution to our reunion fund.
Her wish is that a portion of it go to Sharon Barker who has incurred so many expenses with mailings. I couldn't agree more!
I will share her lovely note at our next meeting in October.

In our thoughts ...
Hi guys,
Got word this morning that my brother, Tom Warren, died. What a shock! I was going to move him from the nursing facility before Thanksgiving, anyway, he died in his sleep. My husband and I are on our way tomorrow. His services are visitation on Thurs from 6-9 at the Chattanooga Funeral Home East, then the funeral at Tom's church, Unity Baptist at 1:30 on Friday. Please keep me in your prayers, he was my younger brother, and I have provided care for him for the last 5 yrs. and I will miss him so much.

New Address for Dan Anderson

Subject: Info on Dan
This has been one fast moving week. Last Friday, Nov. 7th, the hospital notified me that after being there for seven weeks Dan would be discharged the following Monday. He was transferred Wednesday to the Martin Boyd Assisted Living Center. We were advised to not visit until after a week so he could get acclimated to his new surroundings. Needless to say he has been confused and frustrated but they feel after his new meds get in his system he will adjust. For those of you who did not know, Dan was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia, November 2006.
Thanks to those of you who visited him in the hospital and for the many calls I’ve received offering your help and your prayers.

Alvin Fox update and advice
Hi, all. Sorry I haven't been a good communicator lately. Earlier this month my Cardiologist surprised me by finding 2 badly blocked heartarteries, and I required angioplasties with stents. I had bypass surgery 12 years ago, 5 bypasses. I'm very, very lucky he found them, and corrected them.
In "chatting" with Sharon this evening, it occurred to me that a number of our classmates may be flying in for the Reunion. There is a great Shuttleservice between Chattanooga and the Atlanta Airport, and Chattanooga and the Nashville Airport. It may be cheaper to fly in and out of Atlanta or Nashville, and there are many more choices of flights.
The shuttle is Groome of TN. It is on Ringgold Road. They use 10 passanger vans which are clean and comfortable, and they have a reputation of most always being on time. I scanned their schedule, and it is attached. Scroll down as there are three pages. Lauren and I took the shuttle from Nashville to Atlanta recently, and we found it enjoyable. I had a nice chat with our driver from Chatt to Atlanta. He went to City, and graduated in the mid 1960's. He was among the first group to move from Howard High to City. The cost is approx. $35 per person for each segment. They may be willing to work with us as a group. You may want to post this info on our blog, or mail it with the invitations.Take care, Alvin

Update on Dan Anderson
From: Carolyn Anderson

Subject: Update on Dan
Some of you know and some of you don't know that Dan has been at
Parkridge for 5 weeks. They have been trying to find a combination of medicines that will help him sleep at night.
Out of 5 weeks, he has probably had 4 nights with about 6 hrs. sleep. He dozes a little during the day but not much.
I, along with the doctor, cannot understand how his body is holding up. They have tried several combinations and just when we think we may have found something it goes the other way. It has been a real roller coaster for him.
I met with Dan's doctor this morning and he wants to keep Dan one more week. Needless to say he is confused about not being able to find something to help but Dan's body is just not responding. Since Dan dozes during the day they are going to try to give him his meds much earlier in the day and hope that it might help him sleep at night. We can only hope. When he is awake, he is pleasant enough but very confused.
If after this week Dan does not respond to any of the medications, they will have him evaluated by a nursing home. The doctor explained that Vascular Dementia is a little different from Alzheimer's. With Alzheimer's you know the stages and what to expect with them. It is harder with Vascular Dementia in that you don't know what to expect. The doctor feels that Dan is in the last stage but I don't want to believe that.
Please keep him in your prayers.

Good meeting last week. You're really on top of things.
Getting everyone moving in the same direction is a bit like herding cats, but I believe you'll get the job done. Our class is fortunate to have people like you, Sharon (Tunnell), Carolyn (Presswood) and Susie (Crouch).
And of course, Dru (Fuller). I'm amazed at her abilities to handle the internet. Thanks to all of you.
And Sharon (Tunnell): Glad you weathered Ike (that hurricane). Hope you didn't sustain damage.
Best to all,
Lloyd (Stanley)

OMG - what a good meeting we had tonight - some new faces and occasional faces. Carol Cameron Ackerson and Margaret Llewellen Crosby were first timers and some returnees that we haven't seen in awhile were - Della Dowd, Mickey Cobble & Jim Miller.
Now a special thanks to Carol for a very, very generous donation to our reunion fund. Lloyd Stanley handed me another super generous donation from someone at our meeting who wanted to remain anonymous. I think I speak for everyone - both contributions are so much appreciated and needed.
Love from North Chattanooga,

Regrets
Good morning all! I won't be at the meeting either. We are in the middle of another home renovation and I've got three deliveries today (stones, gravel and sod) that I must be here for.
Dianne is in Heaven when she's doing one of these projects. Thank goodness I'm still working. (I've told some of you before that I measure my success by whether or not I'm making more money than Dianne can spend. Right now it's KLS Specialty Products d/b/a Lehman Bros.)
I've been preoccupied with the Vanderbilt reunion which is just three weeks away. Once that's behind me, I can help with our big event! Actually, helping is a misnomer because so much has already been done by the same very capable people who were leading our class 50 years ago.
One way I can help is to send a contribution. So, Susie, please give me the address I need to send the check to. Warmest regards to all y'all.
Kent

Anne, I am sorry to have to tell you that I will not be able to make the reunion committee meeting tomorrow evening. As you know, we have been talking about it for a while, and how much I was looking forward to it.
I missed the last one, that I had also planned to attend, because of a stroke that one of my managers had in one of our companies. I did attend the one before that, and enjoyed it so much. Not only did business get accomplished, but the chance for me to get together with a lot of class mates was just so enjoyable for me.
I have many fond memories of my three years at City, and of many of my class mates. Those of you who live in Chattanooga just don't realize how fortunate you are in the fact that you get to see each other on some what of a regular basis. Those of us who don't live there really do appreciate it when we get to participate.
The reason I won't be there is because of the current gasoline shortage in Atlanta. I have less than a quarter of a tank of gas in my car. The news down here has been saying for a week now that this would get better soon. Well, just the opposite has happened. I tried for well over an hour this evening to get gas, and none of the 5 gas stations I went to had any gas. And when I asked when did they think they would get some, none knew. Their guess was any time from tomorrow to maybe 2 or 3 days from now.
I talked to mom today up on Signal Mtn. and she told me her cleaning lady did not come to clean her house today because she went to 5 different gas stations in Chattanooga, and none of them had any gas.
I am disappointed, as I was looking forward to being there, and to seeing a lot of you. In fact I specifically communicated with George Derryberry, Delmar Lee Reynolds, Lloyd Stanley, Ann & Lew Waddey, and Kent Shalibo to tell them I was coming and that I hoped to see them there. So that is the reason I am placing all of them on the cc of this email to you, to be able to let them know my situation.
My mom is disappointed I will not be in Chattanooga tomorrow as she always enjoys seeing me, and of course I like to visit with her as often as possible, as she is 89.
I was planning on leaving either late Thursday evening after the meeting, or else very early Friday morning, as I have a very important financial meeting in Atlanta that I have to attend Friday. It has been set for months, and affects a number of people, and I have an obligation to them and thus there is no way I could miss it.
Anne, I will miss seeing you and all the others. I really do appreciate all that you and all the other committee members do, and really feel so bad to be letting you down. But the circumstances are beyond my control. Please continue to keep me in the loop as you have been doing.
All my best,
John

Mary Helen McDaris Mertz is in Murfreesboro
Dear Anne,
I am a member of the Chattanooga High School class of 1959 and I heard about the plans for our Reunion from a friend who attended Central High School. She was gracious enough to e-mail me the web site and I have enjoyed reading the news of CHS this afternoon.
I would like to get my name on the invitation list to attend the Reunion in May. I have lived outside Tennessee for many years, but am now retired and live in Murfreesboro. I would appreciate any information you can share with me about our old friends and classmates, plus news and updates on our Reunion.
Thank you for your help.
Sincerely,

POST HURRICANE CHECK-IN
Dear Friends,
A heartfelt thank you for your thoughts and prayers during Hurricane IKE. We felt your love and concern through the long hours. We are safe and unharmed. We lost our fence and one tree, but our home itself seems o.k. We are awaiting return of electricity to our neighborhood. I have renewed respect for our pioneers. Having purchased a generator and a window A/C unit following Rita three years ago, we feel blessed to have a few comforts. I have missed internet access, but I found it at a local cafe this morning. It is a comfort to know that old friends truly are stars in the sky. Thank you for being there!
Love to all,
Sharon

Rick Mitchell says Hi
Hello Classmates...
I've enjoyed reading the blog, catching up on the lives of many of you, and seeing you at the reunion. Here is my story:
After our graduation, I went to Ga Tech, and got a degree in mechanical engineering; wasn't sure that was what I wanted to do (after 4 years, seems like I could have decided earlier and avoided a lot of pain!!). Anyway, as long as I was at Tech, I decided to a Master's degree (No, not Mech Engr, but Industrial Management.)
I married Angela Glover, a young lady from Florida who went to UC. We've been married 44 years (truly a sainted lady). We have two children -- a son Richard who lives in Nashville with his wife and son (8 years); and a daughter who will marry in December and live in Knoxville with her husband and stepson (5 years).
I joined IBM after Ga Tech and was with them in Atlanta for 30 years as a systems engineer. (Retired in 1996). I was, also, commissioned as an officer in the US Army, and stationed at Ft MacPherson with 3rd Army HQ in Atlanta. Wanting to include me in all aspecpts of service life, they invited me to join them for a full year in VietNam in 1968. I was at Long Binh (long, but interesting year). Much to Angela's chagrin, I decided to remain in the Reserves for 26 more years. Ou unit did get called up for Desert Shield in 1993 (?) but just for a month in Houston. When I retired in ''94, it was truly a "Rolaids" moment for Angela.
In retirement...well we live in Vinings in Atlanta, and there are lots of oak trees. They keep falling so I cut and split them up. We spend a little time at our exercise/social club. Angela teaches aerobic swimming (and she trains as a triathlete --she's won 3 events (in her age group) this year. I'm quite proud of her. We're also quite active in our church...Angle in the women's ministry, Rick in the children's ministry and as a bible study leader.
I stay in touch with John Hayes (he's a Tech graduate -- in fact, Student Body president our senior year) he cheers the Yellow Jackets on with me (whern we have something to cheer about -- maybe this year!!). I see Kent Shalibo when he can make it to Atlanta (less and less often)...and, again I look forward to seeing many of you at the reunion.

CHS: Map it!
In this map you can see that the streets from down town where the hotel is located is one way going away from town. Closest parking now is behind the school where the track was.
To go behind the school enter Siskin Drive, take a right in front of the gym.
Some one else may improve upon this map

Sharon Barker Tunnell is safe after Ike!
After 16 hours of high winds and rain, Sharon and family, including several loved dogs are safe! She is without electricity and doesn't expect it to beturned on until Tuesday this week. She said it was positively scary. Her property has tree damage but no flooding. She sends thanks for our concern and will contact us when she is able.

Creed Bates Speech
"By their fruits ye shall know them."
Ideally, the fairest criterion of evaluating a school would be an evaluation of its alumni, if by some magic means we could determine the relative influence that particular school had on the lives of those alumni.
Through the years the record of Chattanooga High School continues to elicit our admiration.
Numbered among them are scholars, outstanding scientists, responsible public officers, business leaders, and successful men and women in all walks of life.
In this school we strive for intellectual integrity, for civic and patriotic virtue, and for the development of well-adjusted students.
You have been an important and vital part of City for the past three years.
We hope that you have benefited in full measured from your sojourn with us.
We believe in you and have full confidence that you will do well your part for your community and country.

G. Wayne Clough goes digital
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Smithsonian Institution will work to digitize its collections to make science, history and cultural artifacts accessible online and dramatically expand its outreach to schools, the museum complex's new chief said Monday.
The Smithsonian Institution's new chief wants to bring in Web gurus to find creative ways to present artifacts online.
"I worry about museums becoming less relevant to society," said Secretary G. Wayne Clough in his first interviews since taking the Smithsonian's helm in July.
Clough, 66, who was president of the Georgia Institute of Technology for 14 years, says he's working to bring in video gaming experts and Web gurus to collaborate with curators on creative ways to present artifacts online and make them appealing to kids.
"I think we need to take a major step," Clough said in an earlier interview. "Can we work with outside entities to create a place, for example, where we might demonstrate cutting-edge technologies to use to reach out to school systems all over the country? I think we can do that."
Smithsonian officials do not know how long it will take or how much it will cost to digitize the full 137 million-object collection and will do it as money becomes available. A team will prioritize which artifacts are digitized first.
Clough told reporters and editors of The Associated Press that the Smithsonian will need a reorganized, central department that would become an authority on K-12 curriculum development.
The biggest advantage for the museums, including the American history and air and space, is that many of their visitors are younger. Longtime Smithsonian leaders acknowledge, though, that the academic side could do more to relate to youngsters.
"Wayne's coming from a place, Georgia Tech, where he spent a lot of time with 19-year-olds, which is a demographic that the Smithsonian doesn't relate to all that much," said Richard Kurin, the acting under secretary for history, art and culture. "That's where the future is."
It's also a new way for the Smithsonian to generate cash from private educational foundations or the U.S. Department of Education at a time when funding from Congress is flat and could decline, Clough said.
The Georgia native replaced a Smithsonian chief who was criticized for pursuing questionable commercial ventures, including a television deal with Showtime, and spending lavishly on corporate travel and expenses while trying to boost moneymaking operations.
The push to connect with schools comes as some museums across the country are seeing declines in student field trips, said Ford Bell, president of the American Association of Museums.
The federal No Child Left Behind law with its "focus on math and reading, and the high prices of gasoline is a double whammy," Bell said.
Some museums are going out of their way to prove their programs tie in with state education standards, Bell said. Museum leaders also are increasingly focused on digitizing their online collections, despite its expense, he said.

Where IS she now:?
Hello Dynamo 59ers
My, how time flies! I cannot believe that we are old enough to be planning a 50th reunion.....but my driver's license says it is.
Now let's see--little bit about my life. Graduated from UC in ' 62. Married for 46 years to Bob Crosby whom some of you may remember from Brainerd . Got my masters degree from Austin Peay while he was in Vietnam. Have 2 sons....one still single but to be married in ' 09. One 23 year old grandson who lives near us. We have lived in Indianapolis since 1979..so both boys graduated from Indiana University. Stayed here after Bob retired from the Army after 20 years and lots of military moves around the country. Taught school for 5 years total including 2 in New Orleans when the Army sent Bob to Tulane for his MBA. I have been a Realtor here in Indianapolis for 28 years....and yes, I am still working.
Bob and I love to travel, are involved in our church, several service groups, have started spending February in Savannah to escape the Indiana winters. Indy is a great place to live......except in January and February.
We only make trips to Chattanooga when Bob has his Baylor reunions. In fact, he has his 50th the first weekend of October. I may even be there to attend the next "planning" meeting to say hello. I keep in touch with Connie Harmon Temple, Charlotte Meacham Mullis and Judy Lynes Arnold. We left Chattanooga in ' 66.
Thanks to all the great work y'all are doing with the lists of contact information......I have a new friend here in the area. Louella Cherry Spencer and I have met and enjoy each other's company. Only knew each other in passing while in school.
Thank you to so many of you who are working to make our reunion a success. We are looking forward to seeing everyone in May.
God bless everyone,
Margaret Llewellyn Crosby

News from Sharon Barker Tunnell
Carolyn (Presswood),
Thank you so much for your note of concern. We are storm weary already, but we are almost ready for its arrival tomorrow afternoon/evening. We have our supplies; we just need to board up the windows. As we are not in the evacuation zones, we are staying home.
Fortunately , we are 60 miles inland from Galveston. We live in a former pine forest, which causes us concernabout trees. The thoughts and prayers of our friends afar mean so much to us.

Did anyone know Jeanne’s mother died. Her obit was in last week’s paper. I believe they had services last Sunday. We were going to try and go for visitation but didn’t make it. I wonder if anyone heard from her?
Dan is doing about the same………good days, bad days. Things seem to be slipping a little more each day, he can’t remember how to dial a number anymore and has trouble finding the word he wants to say but we’re hanging in there.
Hope everyone is doing okay.

In 2006, she was reelected to a second eight-year term.
Justice Janice M. Holder, the third woman in the state's history to serve on the Supreme Court of Tennessee, will become the first woman ever to serve as its chief justice when she is sworn into office.

"I have the highest respect for the court's intellectual integrity, enthusiasm, work ethic, and commitment to the law and public service."

Marsha Moore Cunningham checks in!
Love from North Chattanooga,
Susie Turner Crouch

Hope this picture will do
Carolyn (Presswood) - hope this picture will do. Sorry to say that once again I won't be able to attend the next meeting. We will be leaving for Texas on September 24 to plan a birthday party for my great-aunt who will be 104 on September 29. We will not be back in town until October 3. We probably don't leave town more than 4 times a year and it seems that our dates always conflict with the reunion meetings. Hopefully next time will work. Keep up the good work - we all appreciate what you are doing. Linda (Chambers)

Linda Rhoden McKinney checks in
Dear Dru,
I am still hanging in there with a full-time job at Unum Disability Ins. as a Clinical Consultant. I reversed careers and raised 4 daughters before I obtained my degree in nursing in 1987.
I worked as a floor nurse for many years with the last setting as a Rehab Registered Nurse (CRRN) at Siskin Hospital just behind our old "Alma Mater" before coming to Unum 8 years ago.
Jim and I have been married 48 years and God blessed us with 4 daughters and 8 grandchildren from age 20 to 3 years.
We are excited about the 50th reunion as Jim loves this class as much as I do. He was in the 1954 class and they continue to have reunions since their 50th.
We are planning a trip to Rome, Tuscany and Riviera in May (leaving Sun after weekend reunion) and I possibly will finally retire after that - who knows??? Hard to leave a good job working with lots of YOUNG folks.
Hope to see lots of people in the Hospitality Suite Room #152 at the CHOO CHOO and get acquainted again!! (see scheduled times)

Hi Everyone,
I came home yesterday from Cotton Ball practice - how many of you remember the Cotton Ball? It is still going strong just a lot fewer belles!
More important was the very, very generous check from John Hayes to help with financing our reunion.
John comes from Atlanta to a lot of our meetings and we appreciate it and we thank him.
Love from North Chattanooga,
Susie Turner Crouch

Where IS she now:?
Hi Dru,
I taught school for 17 years and my husband and I have a small rental company --- we own seven houses on the Northshore, which we rent out.
One of my (one) sons-in-law is a news manager or manager of the newsroom in Memphis --- “right up your alley.”
I’ve been married 47 years “wow.”
My newest grandchild is from China, two of the other grandchildren are from Chattanooga, graduated from Baylor and one is studying in France (we hope he is studying).
I really, really appreciate your continued dedication to the reunion and I remember junior high --- good times when I knew you the best.
I like writing and talking and have not become involved in computers --- but I am very impressed with you! I really enjoyed our new “acquainting.” Thanks.
We, Jesse and I, became involved with Suzie Senkinila (from Belarus) through a mission group. It has been a long association.
Sergei came to us through a mission group. He came to the U.S. at ten and is now 21. We sent him to college (really tech school) in Belarus. He is an orphan and his sister raised him.
These are the basics. I’m sending you the info. --- if you feel it should be “blogged” feel free.
Thanks,
Love,
Sandra Belk King

Hello, Jesse and Sandra.
Sergei’s sister Olga is writing to you.
I’d like thank you for the wonderful trip, which your family has given to Sergei.
I liked the presents you sent to me very much.
I know that you work very hard in order to invite Sergei. Dr. Tonya told me a lot about you.
She said that you’re very educated and kind people, that Sergei is very lucky that he has met you. My brother loves you very much.
I’d like you to come to us.
Sergei will try to enter the college next year and we have already found the teacher on mathematics.
Thank you for all. Olga
(this is from Sergei’s sister – he has no mother and father)

Chernobyl Childrens Program
2604 Avalon Hill, Chattanooga, TN 37415
April 26, 2005
We are very excited about our wonderful organization and wish to share it with you!
This year marks the 13th anniversary of the incredible relationship between medicine and Chernobyl of Belarus and our Chernobyl Children's Program (CCP).This outreach program was founded by Dr. Henry and Wendy Williams and is made possible through the support and involvement of our community.
Our mission is relatively simple. We host Belorussian children between 8 and 16 years of age whose lives have been impacted by the Chernobyl nuclear explosion, which occurred over a decade ago. This type of humanitarian program exists worldwide and is primarily focused on the physical health of young children who live in areas that are affected by radiation. Studies show that rest and recuperation away from radioactive contamination boosts their lowered immune systems.
We feel that our Chattanooga group is unique in that our goal is to use the sharing of our Christian homes as an opportunity to present the gospel to Slavic children. It is our hope that upon returning home they will share their experiences, and perhaps significantly impact others through the faith they witnesses while living in a Christian home. For this reason, we attempt to bring certain children back for recurring visits. The first visit is an icebreaker; followup visits help the relationship to be solidified through trust and familiarity.
We are actively seeking host families who would like to learn about this wonderful opportunity to be a missionary from the comfort of their own home. Area families are invited to join us and provide the guest children to the gospel by allowing them to be part of their families for the month of July. It is rewarding in so many ways.
Their are many ways in which you can help and we would be happy to furnish you with ideas that suit your level of interest. The average cost to bring a child to Chattanooga for the month of July is about $1,300. This includes roundtrip expenses from Belarus, their visa and administrative fees. We send each child home with warm clothing, over the counter medications, and other essential items. Because CCP is a nonprofit organization, contributions are tax deductible.
We hope you will join us in helping the children of Belarus through this wonderful program. P,lease contact us to receive CCP updates, pledge a donation, sponsor a child, join our organization, or pass the word along.
Regards,
Sandra Belk King

Mickie Wade Maddux
Hi Carolyn:
I know everyone is always curious about how we look now. I've attached a recent picture of me--you can send it to other 59ers if you wish. Thanks to all of you who are working on the reunion committee. I am on the board of my artists association and I know how much work volunteers do--it's usually a thankless job!

Last goodbyes to our deceased classmates
We would like to receive written narratives (in Microsoft Word format) about each deceased class member (including their picture, if available) from anyone with knowledge of such. We would like for the narratives to include amusing things about the deceased. We can then take those and put them into a booklet. We will be saying our last goodbyes to our deceased classmates, so let's do it up right.

Reunion planning meeting on July 17th
I think you can see from the look on Kent's face, that we had a very good time at our last reunion planning meeting on July 17th at the Choo Choo! There are more photos on the blog, too. I do want to emphasize that all classmates are invited to the planning meetings and all are welcome to volunteer to make our upcoming 50th reunion a smashing success.
We gathered on July 17th in the hospitality room where we will "meet and greet" during the reunion next May. Anne Johnson welcomed all and gave special thanks to Dru who came from Nashville and continues to be our webmaster and to Sharon who came from Houston and does a super job tracking mailing addresses. She passed around a spreadsheet of those addresses and e-mails we have up to now.
We discussed and agreed on a procedure to get all lined up for upcoming events. We will have chairmen for various activities and duties; those chairpersons will select committee members and report to Anne and all at the meetings.
Vicki Daniel White agreed to head up the decoration comm; we have a theme of "stars." ('59 shines) Linda Rhoden McKinney agreed to chair the hospitality suite with Sandra Belk King as co-chair. They will recruit helpers to man the suite and also line up snacks and drinks for the suite.
Kent Smith and Vicki will "meet and greet" as attendees come in. Reservations will be made by sending in checks in advance.
Ann and Lew Waddey couldn't attend but have agreed to make name tags for the reunion.
We will investigate getting a photographer for Sat evening's banquet.
Nancy Poole Klein is in charge of the scholarship to honor Katherine Pryor. It is to be given thru UTC and will be for a deserving English student. UTC will handle the $ and the selection. If you are interested in knowing more, contact Nancy at NKLEIN0918@aol.com.
Susie Turner Crouch is our treasurer and announced that we have $2100 in our acc't and $400 more pledged. Because we are only charging $59 for Fri and Sat evenings total, we appreciate all the donations we can get. There will be expenses for mailings, printing, decorations, etc, etc in addition to meals.
We went over the itinerary and made the following change. The wine, women and girl talk party with Dian Warren Hodge will be Sat afternoon instead of Fri.
I will send the itinerary for the reunion separately and it is also on the blog.
We welcome feedback; any q. or comment, send to me or Anne Johnson at AnneJohnson@comcast.net.
Our next meeting will be held on Thurs, Oct 2nd, place TBA; all are welcome.

Loved seeing "The Gang"
Thanks Dru !
Loved seeing "The Gang" at the planning meeting
and reading Delmar's recollection of

Delmar (Lee) Reynolds recorded the below speech from memory
Two Key Speeches from the 30th C.H.S.
Class of ‘59 Reunion, Camp Columbus, Hixson,TN.,
August 19, 1989
Recorded by D.L. Reynolds
Mickey Barker: "Dan Anderson has asked me to lead this off; nice of Dan to present me the whole class without format or warning, but I’ll have a go at it.
"Let me welcome all of you to this 30th reunion of our class. Has everyone had a good time and gotten enough to eat? (Nods and applause from the audience)
"Good. I notice a great many changes that 30 years have brought to a number of faces and bodies - and I count myself among them- but we had a number of obscure people in our class and we had a number of queens (Mickey pauses, grins. The audience laughs) and for want of a better word, a number of kings.
"Now its my observation that some of the best-looking people of 30 years ago haven’t worn so well, while some of the more obscure people have blossomed into world-class knockouts. Naturally everyone within the sound of my voice is in the latter category (Mickey grins; audience laughs).
"I notice we have with us two of our former football players, Lanny Davis and George Derryberry. It’s hard for me to remember much about our football team, other than that our win/loss record was 2-9 our senior year. That’s correct, isn’t it, George? You were the quarterback that year, weren’t you? It was 2-9 and not the other way around, despite all these years of wishful thinking, wasn’t it?
(George Derryberry, a prominent Chattanooga law attorney, laughs good-naturedly . The audience laughs also).
"One of my strongest memories of our football games is when we played Soddy-Daisy and Lanny Davis here tackled their all-City player, Hank Lupton. Lanny hit Lupton as he crossed the scrimmage line and got knocked cold as a trout. They had to carry Lanny off on a stretcher. Do you remember that, Lanny?
Lanny Davis: "Yes, H–l, what they told me when I came to, anyway." (audience laughs)
Mickey Barker: "So our football program wasn’t all that great, although it could have gone 0-11, and besides, it was the coaches’ fault, anyway, wasn’t it? (nods, applause, scattered audience laughter).
"But if we lacked a bit in football, we made it up in basketball, didn’t we? (audience nods and applauds). We went to the state finals at least once and we had about an 85% win all around, didn’t we? (confirming nods from the audience)
(To me:) "Delmar, how many people showed up today? I saw you counting heads. 73? That’s a good number, and now I ask, do we have anyone here who traveled further to attend this shindig than Paul Robere here who flew in from, and I’m not stuttering, Bang- Kok, Thai-land? ( Mickey asks this in a comical manner, sticking his neck out and crossing his eyes. Everyone laughs)
"I thought not. That’s some sort of record in itself. Of course, if Sparky Brown is here, not tellin’ where he flew in from! Sparky can make us all clairvoyant! (wild audience laughter).
"I’ve heard a lot of reminiscing this evening but nobody’s mentioned one thing and I want to bring it up. If you wanted to be in a club, Chattanooga High School was the place to go. We had clubs for everything, didn’t we? Key Club, Bulldogs, Jr. Optimist, Boosters, Jr. Lions, Bop club, Hot Rod club, Future projectionists ...if it existed, City had it. But who remembers City’s Private Girls’ clubs? (Most hands go up). How many were there, anyway? All right, who here tonight was a Penguin? (Linda Rhoden and Susie Turner Crouch’s hands go up)
Who was a Lamplighter? Who was a Nomad? (Several hands go up) Who was a Starduster? (Other hands go up) Now I’ve got a good one: who will admit that she was a Hi-de Ho’er? (Several hands go up amid laughter and applause)
(Mickey continues:) "I’m just kidding around up here, folks. I’ll be the first to acknowledge that I always wanted an invitation to one of those famous Hi-De-Ho weekends at Camp Ocoee. Who here ever went to a private girls’ club dance? (All male hands dutifully go up) Who will admit that he didn’t? (No hands go up)
"Something else I remember that I haven’t heard anyone here mention: I don’t know about you, but before I went to Law School, I rarely cracked a book. I spent all my time - nearly every Friday and Saturday night - out in the parking lot of the Tally-Ho restaurant. Who used to cruise the Tally-Ho? ( a scant few hands go up) What were you people doing, anyway, studying? Anyway, Mr. Tally - goodness, I hate to say this because he goes to our church and he has terminal cancer - but 30 years ago Mr. Tally was a real firecracker and we City High boys used to nearly drive him crazy using his telephone. Mr. Tally had a telephone inside his restaurant. We kids used to put a nickle in it and talk for 2 ½ hours. Mr. Tally got tired of it and took the phone off the wall and bolted it to the ceiling. Then he put a ladder behind his counter and if you wanted to talk on his phone, you climbed that ladder to do it. Nobody talked for 2 ½ hours anymore. Some City High boys set fire to his menu sign out in the parking lot one night and burned it up. (A pause) Lots of fires got lit out in that parking lot. ( Mickey smiles knowingly. The audience laughs)
(Mickey becomes serious): "While I’m up here I want to say something about a member of our class who is here today. Odin Woodward here has made a big success and I’m mighty proud of him." (Odin "Buddy" Woodward is a minister; audience applauds)
"Who remembers Raw Meat Rogers? (Nods and laugher from the audience) Raw Meat wore a black leather jacket with "Born to kill you all" in red leather letters on the back and he was about the meanest guy who ever went to Chattanooga High School. (Mickey nervously looks around and asks, in a mock- scared voice) He’s not here tonight, is he? (Audience laughs). Anyway, City finally did the unthinkable and played Central in football and about 20 Central High people decided to steal our City High flag on our flagpole. Raw Meat caught ‘em at it. He fired up his motorcycle and did a wheelie right at ‘em and drove it through the crowd revvin’ and all 20 Central people broke and ran in all directions. (Much audience laughter)
"We had mighty good times at City, but who looked after us the whole time? Who first took us under her wing thirty-three years ago (since Fall, 1956)?
Voice from the audience; "Good Gawd, that’s a long time!"
Mickey, seeing the opportunity, answers with a grin: "That’s just what Miss Pryor said!" (Prolonged appreciative laughter and applause from the audience).
Class of ‘59, I give you our class sponsor, Miss Katherine Pryor."
(Miss Pryor slowly rises to her feet. The entire class rises with her and stands applauding while she makes her way, slowly and with the aid of a cane, to the podium.)Miss Katherine Pryor: "You know, there’s nothing finer than a ‘59'er. I heard those words 33 years ago and they’re just as true today as they were then. I look around tonight and I see clean-cut, successful people, happy people, good people. We had a good class then and we still have a good class- a close class. We wouldn’t be having these reunions if we didn’t. When I took you folks 33 years ago, I didn’t just take you for the time you were in City High School - I took you for life. You’ll always be my children and I’m proud of you all. God bless you all and I say again, There’s nothing finer than a 59'er."
End of this excerpt. That Mickey was able to make this witty speech on no notice whatever impressed me and I wrote it down from memory later that same night. Any mistakes in it are my own and are unintentional. D.L. R. July 10, 2008
